MONTICELLO, Ark. — Henderson State led by a point at the half on the road against Arkansas-Monticello on Saturday, but the Weevils used an early second half run to swing the tide, then withstood a late rally from the Reddies, to get past Henderson 82-72 in front of their home crowd.
After leading 35-34 at the halftime break, the Reddies (7-7, 2-6) fell victim to a 15-2 UAM run to start the second period, which swung the momentum and gave the Weevils a 49-37 lead with 15 minutes to play. The UAM lead ballooned to 59-45 with 10:44 to go in the game, but Henderson would not go away, and used a 17-4 run, highlighted by two 3-pointers from Monticello native-
DJ Franklin, to cut the deficit down to 63-62 with five minutes left. UAM, however, caught its second wind just in time, and used big plays from guards Tyrin Jones and Karim Mawuenyega, to out-score the Reddies 19-10 over the last five minutes and gradually pull away for the 82-72 win.
Henderson had three players in double figures and was led by
Kaylon Tappin, who scored 18 points and hit three 3-pointers, and freshman
Chris Parker, who finished with 14 points and six assists. Franklin was the third double digit-scorer, adding 12 points and a team-high six rebounds in the return to his hometown. Freshman
Raekwon Rogers also had a strong showing for HSU, particularly in the second half, where he had six points, six rebounds and took three charges to force Weevil turnovers during Henderson's big run.
UAM (9-5, 4-4) got off to a strong start in the game and jumped out to a 16-8 lead early in the first half, but the Reddies responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Tappin and
Tanner Hamilton, followed by a 3-point play from Tappin, to go on a 9-0 run and quickly regain a 17-16 advantage at the 10:44 mark. The two teams battled over the remaining 10 minutes, with neither able to gain separation from the other, as Henderson carried its one-point advantage, 35-34, into the locker room, before ultimately suffering the big run to start the second half.
The Reddies were 17-for-21 at the free throw line in defeat, but struggled on the glass, where they were out-rebounded 42-32. The second half was also a struggle for Henderson, as they shot just 36.7 percent while the Weevils hit on 50 percent of their shots from the field.
Henderson's next game is Tuesday on the road at 7:30 p.m. when they take on crosstown rival Ouachita Baptist in the Battle of the Ravine.
