ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Southern Arkansas jumped on Henderson State from the opening tip on Saturday afternoon and never looked back, as the Lady Muleriders defeated the Reddies 78-63 at the Duke Wells Center to snap Henderson's seven-game Great American Conference winning streak.
The Lady Muleriders (4-12, 3-7) were white-hot to start the game, thanks in large part to guard Sue Key, a senior transfer from DI Minnesota. Key was unconscious from the get-go and poured in 24 first quarter points to pace SAU to a 32-12 advantage after one period. The Reddies (11-5, 7-3) narrowed the gap to 35-21 with 6:37 remaining in the half after a 9-3 run to begin the second quarter, but SAU responded with a quick 11-0 spurt of its own to push its lead back up to 46-21 before ultimately leading at the break by 23 points.
Henderson did all it could to claw back into the game in the second half and out-scored the Lady Muleriders by eight points over the last 20 minutes of action, but it was not enough to dig out of the first quarter hole, as SAU cruised to the win to end the Reddies' program-record conference winning streak which began back in November.
Haleigh Henson led Henderson with 19 points and hit three 3-pointers, while
Pink Jones added 11 despite playing just 16 minutes after being saddled with first half foul trouble.
Hailey Estes came up one point short of her fifth double-double in six games, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. Key finished with a game-high 40 points for SAU.
The Reddies shot just 34.5 percent for the game while the Lady Muleriders connected on 47.6 percent of their attempts, including just under 60 percent in the first half.
Henderson returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. when it travels across the street to face Ouachita Baptist in the Battle of the Ravine.
