Henderson State to Take on Rival OBU on Tuesday

After having last week's game postponed due to weather, Henderson State will make the trip across Highway 7 to face arch-rival Ouachita Baptist in Part I of the 2018 "Battle of the Ravine on Tuesday with tip-off for the 205th meeting between the two schools set for 7:30 p.m. at Vining Arena.
             
Henderson dropped to 8-8 overall and 3-7 in the GAC after a 90-76 loss to Southern Arkansas last Saturday at the Duke Wells Center.        

The Reddies have had difficulties on the road this year posting a 1-4 record. Henderson is averaging 68.8 points per game in those five games while shooting 38 percent from the field.
 
Kaylon Tappin needs 14 points to become the 25th player in HSU history to record 1000 career points.
 
The senior from Little Rock averages a GAC leading 19.1 points per game including 20.3 points against GAC opponents. Tappin has scored in double-figures the last 11 games and has totaled 20 or more points nine times.
 
Josh Jones and Chris Parker also average double-figures with Jones scoring 14.5 points per contest and Parker 13.0 points.
 
Jones leads the team in 3-point shooting percentage converting on 41 percent of his attempts, while Parker leads the Reddies in assists with 4.1 dishes per contest.
 
DJ Franklin has played well in the month of January as the sophomore from Monticello, Ark. is averaging 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in the last five games. Last Saturday against Southern Arkansas, Franklin scored a game-high 18 points while knocking down 4-of-5 3-pointers.
             
Ouachita Baptist comes into Tuesday's game with a 6-9 record overall and a 4-6 record in GAC play following an 82-78 win at Arkansas Tech last Saturday.
 
The Tigers hit on 53 percent from the field against the Wonder Boys while forcing 20 turnovers. Kendarious Smith led OBU with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, while Jontavis Willis scored 17 points and Wesley Franklin 12.
 
The Tigers rank 11th in the league in scoring averaging 71.6 points per game while giving up 72.8 points. 
 
Mahlon Martin leads the team in scoring averaging 11.8 points including scoring 12.8 points against GAC opponents. Martin is OBU's top 3-point shooter hitting 42 percent from beyond the arc, connecting on 28-of-66 attempts. Martin has scored in double-figures the last four games and is averaging 16.5 points per game in those contests.
 
Jontavis Willis follows averaging 10.2 points per game. Willis can also shoot the long ball having made 28-of-77 for 36 percent. The senior from Strong, Ark. totaled 13 points against Henderson a year ago.
 
Matt Stanley is also averaging in double-figures at 10.1 points while shooting 45 percent from the field. The freshman from Cabot, Ark. has scored in double-figures seven times this season including a career-high 18 points against Southern Nazarene.        
           
Ouachita Baptist leads the all-time series against Henderson State having a 106-98 advantage in a series that began in 1912.

The two teams split the series last year with the home team winning each game.
The Tigers have won six of the last eight meetings and 8 of the last 11. The winning team has scored 80 or more points in the last five games.
 
Tuesday's double-header will be carried on 106.9 FM KYXK Arkadelphia/Gurdon with Cyrus Wittig handling the play-by-play and David Salley providing the color commentary.
 
The Domino's pregame show will air 5:15 p.m. with the women's game set for 5:30 p.m.
