Parker’s Big Second Half Leads Reddies to 65-63 win over NWOSU

Chris Parker's 18-foot jumper with 5 seconds remaining lifted Henderson State to a 65-63 win over Northwestern Oklahoma, Saturday at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The win extended Henderson's Great American Conference winning streak to three games as the Reddies improved to 11-8 overall and 6-7 in league play.

After trailing 30-27 at the break, Henderson began the second-half with 3-point field goals by Josh Jones and DJ Franklin to take a 37-34 advantage at the 17:20 mark.

The Reddies would lead by as many as 11 points but Northwestern Oklahoma fought back and tied the game at 61-61 with 1:05 to play following a free throw by Brandon Green.

Raekwon Rodgers put Henderson back on top by a field goal with a jumper in the paint off a pass from Parker with 39 seconds remaining.

The Rangers, 12-6 overall and 8-5 in league play, quickly moved the ball down court and Green again tied the score at 63-63 with 31 seconds left on the clock.

Henderson took the clock down to inside 10 seconds before Parker shook loose at the top of the key and buried the game-winner.

NWOSU had one last chance but Green's last second attempt was blocked by Brad Nairn as time ran out.

The first-half was a defensive struggle with six lead changes in the half.

The Rangers built a 30-27 advantage at the half behind 14 points by A'Keem Oglesby who connected on 4-of-5 field goals beyond the arc.

Kaylon Tappin was manhandled by the Rangers but managed to score 10 first-half points, with Matt Panaggio helping keep things close with 6 points off the bench.

Parker, who had just four points in the opening half, ended with a game-high 18 points to lead the Reddies, while Tappin finished with 12 points and Panaggio 10.

Rogers finished the day with 5 points and a team-high 7 rebounds, while Nairn also pulled down 7 boards along with 4 points.

The Reddies finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field, converting on 24-of-55 attempts. Henderson, the top free throw shooting team in the GAC, was successful on 13-of-16 shots from the charity stripe for 81 percent.

NWOSU hit on 24-of-61 from the field for 39 percent. The Rangers knocked down 9-of-20 3-point field goals in the contest.

Henderson will next be on the road as the Reddies travel to Shawnee, Okla. to take Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
