DURANT, Okla. — Henderson State got 20 points from
Torrie Thompson and a second-straight double-double from
Hailey Estes on Saturday afternoon to fight past Southeastern Oklahoma State 56-49 and finish its Oklahoma road trip 2-0.
After trailing by two in a first half where neither team shot over 30 percent from the field, the lid finally came off the basket for the Reddies in the third. With the score tied at 31-31, Henderson put together an 11-2 run to seize its biggest lead to that point, 42-33 at the 1:13 mark of the period. The Savage Storm used two late baskets to trim the deficit to 42-37 heading into the game's final 10 minutes, but the damage was done, as the Reddies out-scored Southeastern by seven in the quarter to put themselves in the driver's seat.
The lead ballooned up to 49-39 for Henderson with 6:50 to play the game, but the Savage Storm would not go away and used a 6-0 spurt to close the gap to just 49-45 at the 4:21 mark. Needing a play, the Reddies got one from
Haleigh Henson, who knocked down a deep 3-pointer to push the lead back to seven, and after a a bucket from SOSU on the other end, Estes canned Henderson's second 3-pointer in 30 seconds from the left corner to give HSU a 55-47 advantage with just 3:47 to play.
Facing an uphill climb with time ticking away, Southeastern tried to force the ball into their post, Emem David, but strong interior defense from
Bree Bossier and
Karrington Whaley late proved critical, as the Savage Storm chose not to foul in the game's final minute and Henderson held on for a 56-49 win.
Thompson played big for the Reddies in the win, finishing with 20 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Estes notched her second double-double of the weekend by tallying 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
