ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State swept both games of last weekend's Oklahoma road trip and will now look to go 6-0 versus the Oklahoma portion of the GAC schedule when they face Southwestern Oklahoma State and Northwestern Oklahoma State this Friday and Saturday.
The Reddies (19-3, 8-1) are looking for their 20th win versus SWOSU, a feat the program has not achieved since the 2007 season when the Reddies won 22 matches. Perhaps more importantly, Henderson State and SWOSU are involved in a three-way tie for first place in the GAC with 8-1 conference records. Furthermore, a win would clinch a spot in the GAC tournament if Southeastern Oklahoma State were to lose their matchup versus Arkansas-Monticello. It would be the Reddies first visit to the GAC tournament in head coach Phil McDaniel's tenure.
Scouting Southwestern Oklahoma State
After struggling towards a 27-37 record between 2016 and 2017, the SWOSU Bulldogs have had a bounce-back season. Southwestern Oklahoma State (15-4, 8-1) got off to a hot start, winning eight of their first nine matches. The Bulldogs home court has proven to be a fortress, but SWOSU has been beatable away from home, as all four of their losses have come at neutral or away matches. The Bulldogs are anchored by junior defensive specialist Kaitlyn Dillon, who was an Honorable Mention All-GAC performer last season. Dillon leads SWOSU with 387 defensive digs on the season. When the Bulldogs attack, they do so by committee. Five SWOSU players have more than 100 kills on the season. The Bulldogs are coached by Josh Collins, who is in his seventh season at the helm of SWOSU volleyball.
Scouting Northwestern Oklahoma State
The Lady Rangers season got off to a sizzling start, winning their first seven matches. However, as the season has progressed, NWOSU has struggled to find consistency and has gone 5-5 in its past 10 matches. Northwestern Oklahoma State (15-9, 4-5) currently sits 8th in the GAC standings, one match behind Southern Nazarene, but two matches in front of Southeastern Oklahoma State for the final spot in the GAC Tournament. The Lady Rangers returned plenty of talent from the 2017 squad, including 2017 GAC Newcomer of the Year Brooklynn Hesson, First-Team All-GAC performer Jennifer Eubanks, and Second-Team honoree Hannah Williams. Jeremy White coaches the Lady Rangers and is in his second season at NWOSU.
