ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Five players scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon as Henderson State rolled past Hannibal-LaGrange 83-62 at the Duke Wells Center.
The Reddies (4-1) were led in scoring by
Rel Johnson, who finished with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win.
Chris Parker,
Eric Dailey, and
Kyle Murphy each had 12 points, while
Jeremiah Toney chipped in 10.
Henderson got off to a fast start early and used two 3-pointers from Parker and one from Murphy to go in front 23-7 in the first eight minutes of action. The Reddies opened up a lead of as many as 20 points on three separate occasions in the first half as they coasted to a 43-26 halftime advantage.
The Trojans did their best to make things interesting at the start of the second period, when they used a 13-3 run in the first seven minutes of the half to trim HSU's lead down to just 48-39 with 12:39 to go.
With Hannibal-LaGrange within striking distance, it was Johnson who gave the Reddies the boost they needed to pull away, as he scored eight-straight points on two 3-pointers and two free throws over the next two minutes to single-handedly give Henderson an 8-0 run and push the lead back out to 56-39. The Trojans never threatened again, as the Reddies eventually opened up a lead of as many as 27 points before closing it out 83-62.
As a team, Henderson won the rebounding battle for the fifth-straight game, out-rebounding the Trojans 38-28. The Reddies also had 32 bench points in the win and held Hannibal-LaGrange to just 35.5 percent shooting in the second half.
The Reddies will face their first Great American Conference opponent of the year next Thursday, Nov. 29, when they travel to Magnolia, Arkansas, to take on Southern Arkansas at 7:30 p.m.
