Reddies Defeat Oklahoma Baptist 3-0, Clinch First Postseason Win Since 2007 to Advance to GAC Semifinals

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Courtney Bolf and Zuzana Ondruskova turned in double-doubles as Henderson State won its first postseason match since 2007 with a victory over the Oklahoma Baptist Lady Bisons, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20). The win is the first postseason victory for the Reddies since defeating West Alabama 3-0 during the Gulf South era of HSU athletics.

Bolf and Ondruskova combined for 26 kills and 36 digs as the Reddies controlled the match from start to finish. Henderson got fantastic complimentary attacking play from Karlie Greene, Adrianna Hartmann, and Tyasia McGruder who finished with eight, seven, and six kills, respectively. The trio combined for an incredibly efficient .473 attacking percentage. Kenzie Thoman was a defensive stalwart all afternoon for the Reddies, and collected 18 digs. Abby Blackburn and Taylor Scalzi combined for 42 assists.

The Reddies will face the winner of the match between No. 2 seed Southwest Oklahoma State and No. 7 seed Southern Nazarene tomorrow in the GAC semifinals at 3:30 p.m. in the Bank OZK Arena in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Set One
The Reddies first post-season appearance since 2016 got off to a good start with an excellent short-serve by Blackburn that was eventually finished off by a kill from Ondruskova to give the Reddies a 1-0 advantage. Henderson looked sharp in the early going, as kills from Greene and Alex Tyler, as well as solid defensive work from Thoman had the Reddies up 6-3. With Henderson up 9-6 the Lady Bison made their first run of the match, using an 8-3 stretch to take a two-point lead, 14-12. With the Reddies looking for offense, they turned to Hartmann, who responded with three kills in five points to help HSU retake a 16-15 advantage. OKBU scored two-straight to retake the lead, 17-16, but the Reddies responded with a quick 3-0 spurt to go back in front 19-17 and force an OKBU timeout. The stoppage didn't help the Lady Bison, as it was Henderson's lone senior, Ondruskova, who provided the Reddies with four-straight kills to give HSU its largest lead, 23-18. An ace from Blackburn pushed the Lady Bison to set point and a kill from Greene gave the Reddies the set one victory, 25-19.

Set Two
Neither team could find an early advantage in the second as the Reddies and Lady Bison exchanged the first six points to find themselves tied, 3-3. A quick spurt from Oklahoma Baptist put the Lady Bison up 6-4, but kills from Bolf and McGruder helped the Reddies regain a 7-6 lead. The score was 9-9 when the Reddies started to put things together offensively. Bolf's eighth kill of the match, an ace from Ondruskova, and a kill from Hartmann gave HSU its biggest lead, 13-10. A controversial call led to the day's first challenge which was won by Henderson State, making the score 15-11 HSU, and forcing OKBU into a timeout. Again the timeout did little to stop Henderson's momentum, as an ace from Bolf and a block assist from McGruder and Hartmann pushed the Reddies lead to six, 17-11. For the second time, Ondruskova stepped up down the stretch, this time collecting three kills in four points as the Reddies pushed closer to a two-set lead, 20-14. OKBU would get no closer than six points, as two kills from Bolf pushed her match total to 10 and gave the Reddies a commanding 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 win.

Set Three
The Reddies started slow in the third set and found themselves in an early 4-1 hole. However, the deficit didn't last long, as two Bolf kills pushed the Reddies in front, 6-5. With Henderson looking for separation, it was the freshman McGruder who answered the call, as she notched three block assists and two kills to push the Reddies to a 13-7 lead and force an OKBU timeout. The Lady Bison found their footing following the stoppage and went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 15-15. After a timeout of their own, the Reddies went back to Hartmann and she delivered with two kills in four points to hand the Reddies a 19-17 lead. Moments later, with HSU up 21-19, OKBU celebrated a long rally prematurely as Thoman preserved the point, which was finished off by Ondruskova, extending the Henderson lead to three, 22-19. An ace from Ondruskova on the next point pushed OKBU to the brink and Greene's eighth kill of the afternoon gave the Reddies their first postseason win in over a decade, 25-20.
