RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Henderson State had four players in double figures and withstood a furious rally from Arkansas Tech in the final moments to defeat the Golden Suns 70-62 and pick up its first win in Tucker Coliseum since 2005-06.
The Reddies (5-1, 2-0) controlled the game for most of the afternoon and led 57-43 entering the fourth quarter, but Arkansas Tech (3-3, 1-1), who had never led, outscored Henderson 19-7 through nine minutes in the period to trim the lead down to just 64-62 with under a minute to play.Â
With Henderson needing a bucket, it was
Pink Jones who delivered for HSU, as she got a running floater to go with 35 seconds left to push the lead back out to 66-62. An ATU miss and intentional foul on the other end effectively ended it as Jones went 4-for-4 down the stretch at the line to ice it and give the Reddies a massive 70-62 victory.Â
Jones led the Reddies with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while
Hailey Estes added 14 and six boards.
Maci Mains chipped in a career-high 13 point and hit three first-half 3-pointers, and
Lani Snowden finished with 10 points and was 5-for-5 from the line. Henderson was out-rebounded 53-38, but forced 23 Tech turnovers and committed just 12.Â
HSU got off to a great start in a hostile environment as the Reddies used seven early points from Snowden to seize a 17-6 lead at the 2:32 mark of the opening quarter.Â
Arkansas Tech closed the deficit to 21-12 after one, but HSU got seven-straight points from Mains to begin the second, which spurred a 9-0 Henderson run and gave the Reddies a commanding 30-12 advantage with seven minutes to play in the half.Â
The Golden Suns, who shot just 18.8 percent in the first quarter and 25 percent from the field in the half, got some shots to go late in the quarter, but six 3-pointers helped give HSU a 41-29 lead at the break. ATU trimmed the Reddies' lead down to 49-42 late in the third, but HSU used a late 8-0 run to stretch the lead back out to double figures before the eventful final quarter.Â
The Reddies' next game is on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. against Wiley College in the Duke Wells Center.
