Arkansas-Fort Smith scored five runs in the seventh-inning to beat Henderson State 9-3, Sunday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
UAFS, 5-0 on the year, benefitted from a pair of errors and two walks which resulted in four unearned runs in the 5-run 7th-inning to pull away from the Reddies.
The Lions jumped on top 2-0 in the fourth-inning as Jace Pitchford led off with a home run and Jordany Santiago lined a one-out RBI single up the middle.
The Reddies, 3-3 on the year, answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning as
Brandon Pollock belted a two-out single to score
Dalton Guthrie who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
After UAFS scored its five runs in the seventh, the Lions tacked on two more in the eighth to extend their lead to 9-1.
Henderson would score two runs in the bottom of the eighth as
Taylor Langston and
Jackson Martin collected back-to-back one-out singles.
Dylan McCain was then hit by a pitch to load the bases before Langston scored on a wild pitch.
Gutherie drove in the final Reddie as he collected his first collegiate hit to score Martin.
UAFS pitcher Dawson Floyd pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out 10 batters while allowing six hits to get the win.
Daniel Sprinkle started the game for the Reddies and pitched four innings giving up two runs on five hits and was tabbed with the loss.
Zach Eschberger began the fifth-inning and pitched the next four innings giving up 7 runs including 5 unearned on five hits.
The Reddies totaled eight hits in the game with Pollock, Martin, and
Zack Gray having two hits each.
Henderson will begin Great American Conference play next week when the Reddies travel to Bethany, Okla. to face Southern Nazarene in a three-game series beginning with a single game on Friday at 2 p.m.
