Henderson State fell victim to cold shooting late in the second-half as Ouachita Baptist beat the Reddies 87-81, Tuesday at the Duke Wells Center.
Trailing 65-63 with 5:45 left in the game, the Reddies missed 10 consecutive field goal attempts to allow Ouachita to build a 10-point lead with just under three minutes to play.
Henderson, 13-13 overall and 8-12 in the GAC, continued to fight back down the stretch and had the deficit cut to 83-79 by forcing OBU to score from the foul line and answering with 3-pointers by
Josh Jones,
Chris Parker and
DJ Franklin, while
Matt Panaggio scored six of his 12 points during the final two minutes.
OBU, 12-13 overall and 10-10 in the GAC, would hold on for the victory as Mahlon Martin hit six straight free throws down the stretch.
Ouachita jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead to begin the game, but the Tigers went on a scoring drought which lasted over four minutes as the Reddies got a three-point field goal by
Kaylon Tappin and a 3-point play by
Raekwon Rogers to cut the deficit to 12-10.
The Tigers would hold a slim lead for most of the first-half until Parker hit back-to-back 3-point field goals to put the Reddies on top 29-26 with 4:59 left in the half.
Henderson would extend its lead to seven by the end of the half as Jones knocked down a long-range jumper and Parker hit a 12-footer as time expired to give the Reddies a 40-33 advantage at the break.
The Tigers would overtake the Reddies midway through the second half with the help of 52 percent shooting from the field as OBU connected on 16-of-31 attempts in the final 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, Henderson shot just 39 percent in the half converting on 14-of-36 attempts.
Parker ended the game with a career-high 26 points including five 3-point field goals, while Jones scored 14 points.
DJ Franklin and Panaggio also ended in double-figures with Franklin having 13 points and a team-best 7 rebounds, while Panaggio scored 12.
The Reddies finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field connecting on 29-of-62 attempts, while the Tigers made 30-of-61 field goals for 49 percent shooting from the floor.
Henderson State will travel to Magnolia, Ark. on Thursday to take on Southern Arkansas with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
