Big Day at the Plate Leads Reddies to Pair of Wins Over Oklahoma Baptist on Sunday

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got 22 hits as a team, including four each from Bethany Allen, Ashleigh Erb and Courtney Warren, and hit .385 for the day to pick up two wins over Oklahoma Baptist on Sunday at Dee White Field.

The second doubleheader of the four-game series comes tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Dee White Field.

GAME ONE: Henderson State 7, Oklahoma Baptist 4
Six different players finished with two hits and Henderson State got past Oklahoma Baptist 7-4 in the Great American Conference opener for both teams.

The Reddies, the designated visiting team, got off to a great start in the top of the first when Bethany Allen singled and was brought home on a double from Lindsey Williams on the next at-bat to make it 1-0. With runners on first and second, Ashleigh Erb came through with an RBI double that scored Madie Green, put two runners in scoring position and made it 2-0. Henderson got its third run of the first half inning when Kailey Reese grounded out to second base, which scored Nadia Ballarin from third and pushed the HSU lead out to 3-0 after one.

Henderson tacked on its fourth run in the top of the second, when Williams grounded out to score Olivia Trapp. Things got a lot less comfortable for the Reddies, however, in the bottom half of the inning, as Oklahoma Baptist came roaring back with four runs on five hits to erase the HSU momentum and square the game up at 4-4.

Williams helped the Reddies regain the lead in the fourth. After coming through with a single, Williams took advantage of a lull in the game action and came up with an unconventional steal of second. With two outs and a runner suddenly in scoring position, Henderson took advantage, as Green came through with an RBI single to score Williams and put HSU back in front 5-4.

Not content with a one-run lead, Henderson added a run in each of the next two innings. Back-to-back doubles from Erb and Trapp scored one in the fifth, while Green picked up her second RBI in the sixth on a sac fly that plated Alexis Morton from third.

Leading 7-4, the Reddies turned to Mallory Brewer to close it out, which she did, after giving up just one hit in her two innings of action to help Henderson secure its first GAC win of the year.

Reddies' starter Sydney Bonner got the win by going 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. After the big second frame for OKBU, Bonner allowed just two hits in her final three innings of work.

At the plate, Allen, Williams, Green, Erb, Morton and Courtney Warren all had two hits apiece, while both Green and Williams finished with two RBIs. As a team, Henderson hit .400 in the game (12 for 30).

GAME TWO: Henderson State 5, Oklahoma Baptist 2
After falling behind in the early going of the second game, Henderson State scored five unanswered runs in the middle innings to take control and defeat Oklahoma Baptist 5-2 in the late game on Sunday at Dee White Field.

The Lady Bison went up 1-0 in the first when Katie Reyes, who was on third, broke for home after Courtney Warren threw out Dani Manning, who was attempting to steal second.

With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the third, Madie Green came up with a sac fly to left, which was just deep enough to score Alexis Morton from third and tie the game 1-1. The Reddies were far from done in the inning, though, as the next batter, Kaitlyn Felder ripped a single into left field to score both Lindsey Williams and Bethany Allen and give Henderson a 3-1 advantage.

Good situational play from the Reddies helped plate two more runs in the fourth. After a leadoff single from Ashleigh Erb, Nadia Ballarin laid down a perfect sac bunt to get Erb into scoring position and a single into right by the next batter, Kailey Reese, scored her to make it 4-1. Warren singled in the next at-bat for Henderson to put two runners on, and after a line out from Morton, Allen came through with her second hit of the game, and fourth of the day, to score Reese and make it 5-1 Reddies.

Although OKBU got one run back in the fifth, a four-run cushion was more than enough breathing room for starter Michelle Sorensen, who got her fourth win of the year by going the distance and allowing just one earned run, on three hits while striking out five.

Allen, Erb, Reese and Warren all finished with two hits for the Reddies, while Felder had a game-high two RBIs on her single in the third.
