Reddies Make Big Plays Late to Survive SNU 63-57

BETHANY, Okla. — Behind a double-double from Bree Bossier and some big plays late, Henderson State got past Southern Nazarene 63-57 on Saturday afternoon to claim its 15th win of the season — the most for the program since 2010-11.

After trailing by four at halftime, SNU (7-12, 5-10) gained some ground in the third quarter to send the game into the fourth with the score locked at 42-42. With just under three minutes to play in the game, SNU finally broke the tie and took a 57-56 lead on a free throw from Alexus Jones. It would be the Crimson Storm's last point of the afternoon, as the Reddies held them scoreless for the rest of the contest.

On the next possession for Henderson (15-6, 11-4), freshman Lani Snowden was fouled and calmly hit two free throws to push HSU in front 58-57. After another stop, Hailey Estes found some room in the lane and drained a 10-foot runner to stretch the lead out to 60-57 with 1:44 remaining. The two teams traded empty possessions and a Reddies turnover gave the Crimson Storm a chance to tie with less than 30 seconds to play, but Blu Jones stole the SNU inbounds pass and after being fouled, hit one at the line to make it a two-possession game. A desperation 3-pointer from the Crimson Storm drew iron and Estes iced the game at the line seconds later to help Henderson survive and clinch its 11th Great American Conference win of the season.

Bossier continued her strong play, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Reddies on both ends. Both Jones sisters scored in double figures, as Pink had 15 and seven rebounds, while Blu tied her career-high with 14 to push her streak of double figure scoring games up to four contests. Haleigh Henson made two big second half 3-pointers to finish with six points and tie the GAC record for 3-pointers in a career with 268.

Things were tight early on, but with the scored knotted at 17-17 with 7:30 to play in the first half, Henderson began to gain some separation. The Reddies used two buckets from Pink Jones and a 3-pointer from Estes to jump start an 11-0 run, pushing them in front 28-17 with just under three minutes to go in the quarter. SNU answered quickly before the break however and used a 9-2 run to close the half and narrow the Henderson lead down to just 30-26 heading into the locker room.

As usual, Henderson played terrific defense and held SNU to just 30.5 percent shooting from the floor. The Reddies were also money at the free throw line, going 20-for-22 on the afternoon. HSU won the rebounding battle once again, out-boarding the Crimson Storm 37-33.

The Reddies return to action on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they face Southeastern Oklahoma State at home in the Duke Wells Center.
