Down to Final Strike, Henderson Rallies to Split with Southeastern Friday

DURANT, Okla. — Henderson State used a massive two-out rally in the second game on Friday to fight back and earn a split of the first doubleheader with Southeastern Oklahoma State.

The Reddies and Savage Storm face off in the second doubleheader tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Durant, Oklahoma.

GAME TWO: Henderson State 8, Southeastern Oklahoma 5
Down to its final strike, Henderson State scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to storm back and defeat Southeastern Oklahoma 8-5 and earn a split of Friday's doubleheader.

With two outs in the top of the seventh and trailing 5-3, the Reddies found some life after Madie Green was hit by the first pitch she saw and the ensuing batter, Sam Smith, was hit with a 1-2 count to give Henderson two base runners.

Kailey Reese kept HSU's hopes alive in the next at-bat, as she singled to load the bases for Olivia Trapp. On the first pitch she saw, Trapp came through, as she ripped a single into left field, which scored Green and Smith to improbably tie the game for the Reddies.

Henderson's unlikely rally was not done, however. With two on and facing an 0-2 count, the next batter, Kaitlyn Felder, got a hold of one and sent the ball flying over the center field fence to score three runs and give the Reddies an 8-5 lead. A stunned Southeastern squad had no answer in the bottom half of the inning, as HSU closed it out to secure a wild victory.

Becca Almond picked up the complete game win in the circle for Henderson after going 7.0 innings and allowing five runs, on six hits while striking out two. The victory is Almond's third of the season. Green had two hits for the Reddies, while Felder had three RBIs and Trapp and Smith each had two.

The Reddies got on the board first when a throwing error allowed Bethany Allen to score from second and put HSU up 1-0 in the first inning. Four-straight runs from the Savage Storm gave them a 4-1 lead, but Henderson was able to chip away at the deficit in the sixth, when Smith hit her second home run of the doubleheader to score two and cut the lead down to 4-3. SOSU tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth before the Reddies made their big rally.

GAME ONE: Southeastern Oklahoma 8, Henderson State 5
Southeastern Oklahoma State scored six runs off of three home runs and held off a late Henderson State rally to defeat the Reddies 8-5 in the first game on Friday afternoon.

After the Savage Storm jumped in front 1-0 on a double in the first inning, Henderson got going in the third and used a solo home run from Alexis Morton and an RBI single from Madie Green, which scored Bethany Allen, to take its first lead 2-1.

SOSU answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs, two of which came off of a home run from Elexis Watson, to regain a 4-2 lead. Things began to get away from the Reddies when the Savage Storm added to its advantage with two more home runs in the fifth to make it 8-2.

Henderson got some of it back when Sam Smith homered in the sixth to score three runs and pull the Reddies within 8-5. HSU had an opportunity in the top of the seventh, when Courtney Warren doubled and Olivia Trapp singled to bring the tying run to the plate with the Reddies down to their final out. It was not to be, though, as the final batter flew out to center field, ending the rally and giving SOSU the 8-5 win.

The Reddies were led by Smith's three RBIs on her second home run of the season, while Green also had an RBI and finished with two hits. Watson had two home runs and four RBIs for the Savage Storm, who had 10 hits in the game.
