Henderson State, behind strong pitching from
Michelle Sorensen and
Sydney Bonner swept a double-header from 10
th-ranked Harding 3-0 and 2-1, Friday at Dee White Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Henderson pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and gave up just one run on six hits in the twin bill as the Reddies improved to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the Great American Conference.
In the opener, Sorensen struck out seven batters and allowed just three base runners to record the complete-game shutout and improve to 6-1 on the year.
The Sherwood, Ark. native gave up just one hit in the game and that came in the first-inning when Katlyn Gordon reached on an infield single. Sorensen walked two batters during the seven-inning affair and faced just two batters above the minimum.
Bonner pitched four innings in game two allowing one run on four hits with
Becca Almond pitching a scoreless fifth-inning. Sorensen entered the game in the sixth and pitched the final two innings of the contest to pick up her first save of the year and preserve the victory for Bonner who improved to 5-2.
Henderson got on the board in the third-inning scoring a pair of runs in the first game.
Courtney Warren started things with a triple to left field but was later tagged out at home on a fielder's choice by
Alexis Morton.
Bethany Allen then reached on a walk advancing Morton to second.
Following a fly out by
Madie Green,
Selena Mendoza ripped a single down the right-field line scoring Morton and moving Allen to third. The Reddies then executed the double-steal to perfection with Allen stealing home for the second run.
Henderson tacked on a run in the fifth-frame as Morton single to lead off the inning. Allen then grounded into a fielder's choice with Morton being forced out at second. After a walk to Green and a fly out by Mendoza,
Lindsey Williams singled home Allen for the Reddies' final run of the game.
The Reddies totaled nine hits in the contest with
Kailey Reese and
Nadia Ballarin leading the way with two hits each.
In the second game, Harding plated a run in the top half of the third inning on a two-out single by Peyton Mills which scored Lindsey Duncan who singled to lead off the inning.
The lead wouldn't last long a Henderson responded in the bottom half of the inning as Warren reached on an error with Green later hitting her second home run of the year to give the Reddies a 2-1 advantage through three innings of play.
Harding, 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the GAC, threatened in the fourth by loading the bases, but Bonner worked her way out of the jam forcing a fly out to end the inning.
Almond and Sorensen teamed to close out the game for the Reddies in the circle.
The two teams will wrap up the four-game series with a double-header Saturday at Dee White Field with the first pitch set 1 p.m.
