ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — In front of one of the largest crowds in the history of Dee White Field, Henderson State got a big rally in game one and a convincing victory in game two to sweep Arkansas-Monticello in the teams' Great American Conference series.
The Reddies return to action on Tuesday at home when they face off with rival Ouachita Baptist in a doubleheader set for 4 p.m.
GAME ONE: Henderson State 8, Arkansas-Monticello 6
Henderson erased a six-run, first-inning deficit by scoring eight unanswered to defeat UAM 8-6 and claim the outright series win.
UAM's bats were hot at the start and the Blossoms used six hits to score six runs in the top of the first, which put the Reddies in a 6-0 hole almost immediately.
HSU got the first run back in the second, when
Alexia Lopez launched her second home run of the series out to right center to make it 6-1. The Reddies continued to chisel away in the third and used a double from
Bethany Allen and
Christianna Camp's second home run of the series to plate two more and cut the deficit to 6-3.
In the fourth inning, Henderson came roaring back, and used four hits, as well as two UAM errors, to score five runs and seize an 8-6 advantage.
Sam Smith got things started with an RBI single which scored
Lindsey Williams.
Madie Green followed suit with an RBI single of her own to plate
Alexis Morton and make it 6-5.
With Green on first and
Ashleigh Erb standing on third, for the second-straight game, the Reddies implemented the double steal, and for the second-straight game, it paid off. Green drew the attention as she went for second and Erb took advantage, scoring the game-tying run.
An error kept the inning alive for Henderson when Camp reached after the Blossoms' first baseman dropped the ball on the throw, which brought Lopez to the plate. Lopez continued her torrid pace by ripping an RBI single to right center to score Green and give HSU its first lead, 7-6. The Reddies got their final run of the inning when Camp scored on an error by the shortstop. Camp's score made it 8-6 and swung all the momentum to the Reddies' favor.
UAM threatened in the final three innings, getting runners on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh, but could not score, as
Mallory Brewer shut down the Blossoms to close it out for the Reddies.
Brewer, who relieved the Reddies' starter in the first inning, pitched seven full innings, allowed just two runs to pick up her second win of the season. Lopez finished 3 for 4 at the plate for Henderson, while both
Kailey Reese and Williams had two hits.
GAME TWO: Henderson State 7, Arkansas-Monticello 1
After UAM scored a run in the first, Henderson State answered with seven-straight to win it 7-1 and sweep the Blossoms in the weekend series.
Trailing 1-0, the Reddies got an RBI walk from
Alexia Lopez and a fielder's choice RBI from
Sam Smith with the bases loaded to regain a 2-1 lead.
In the second, Henderson got two more, as Lopez again came through, this time with a two RBI single, which scored
Christianna Camp and
Bethany Allen, to extend the advantage to 4-1.
Lopez's incredible day was not done, however, as she homered in the fifth to make it 5-1 and then drove in
Madie Green with a sac fly in the sixth to push the lead to 6-1.
Lindsey Williams got the Reddies their final run with a sac fly out in sixth, which scored Camp once again.
Henderson's
Sydney Bonner, who came in for starter
Becca Almond in the third inning, did her part late, as she retired the final 12 batters in order to help the Reddies win it 7-1.
Almond got her fourth win of the season in the circle for HSU. Lopez was tremendous offensively and finished 2 for 2 with five RBIs.
