Reddies Drop Series Finale to Rangers 2-1

Henderson State managed just four hits on Saturday as the Reddies fell 2-1 to Northwestern Oklahoma in the series finale at Clyde Berry Field.

The Reddies, 27-16 overall and 20-10 in the Great American Conference, scored its lone run in the first-inning as Caleb Carr led off the game with a single. Joe Myers advanced Carr to second when he reached base on a walk.

Zack Gray then lined a single up the middle to force home Carr. The Reddies would proceed to put runners on second and third with one out, but Ranger starting pitcher Baron Phillips was able to strike out the next two batters to get out of the inning.

In the Henderson second-inning, Phillips hit both Brandon Pollock and Bryson Haskins with a pitch. The Reddies had runners on the corners with one out before relief pitcher Matthew Bickford forced Carr to ground into a double-play to end the inning.

Reddie starting pitcher Daniel Sprinkle retired the first 12 batters he faced and would pitch six scoreless innings before Johnnuelle Ponce led off the seventh-inning with a solo home run to centerfield to tie the score at 1-1.

The Rangers put together three more hits in the frame adding another run to go on top 2-1 and chase Sprinkle.

Meanwhile, Bickford held the Reddies in check retiring nine straight batters before surrendering a two-out single to Carr in the fifth-inning.

Henderson would put together its only threat in the seventh-inning as Brentten Schwaab led off with an infield single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Pollock. Daniel Colasanto walked to put runners on first and second with one-out, before Haskins hit a shot to third that forced out Schwaab. Bickford got out of the inning forcing Carr to foul out to third base.

Bickford would retire the Reddies in order the next two innings to pick up the win.

Henderson's Brayden Beebe pitched the final 2.1 innings and did not allow a hit while striking out three Ranger batters.

Henderson will next play host to Arkansas-Monticello in a non-conference contest on Tuesday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
