MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Henderson State was limited to just one run in two games on Sunday, as No. 5 Southern Arkansas took both contests from the Reddies to end HSU's six-game winning streak.
The Reddies (24-15, 16-12) resume action tomorrow for the second doubleheader of the series, set for 4 p.m. in Magnolia, Arkansas.
GAME ONE: No. 5 Southern Arkansas 3, Henderson State 0
The Reddies held SAU to just four hits on the day, but the Lady Muleriders scored two in the fifth to pull away for the game one win.
SAU, one of the premier offensive teams in the country, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from Monica Islava, but could muster just two hits in the next three innings against Henderson starter
Sydney Bonner.
HSU had an opportunity in the third, when both
Kailey Reese and
Madie Green singled at the plate, but the Reddies could not scratch a run, as they stranded two to leave the score 1-0.
In the fifth, the Lady Mulerider bats woke up a bit, as they used two hits, two walks and a Henderson error to score two runs and increase their lead to 3-0.
Needing to get something going, the Reddies could not, as SAU pitcher Victoria Taylor, who is 16-0 on the year, allowed just one hit in the final two innings to close it out for the Lady Muleriders.
Bonner allowed just two earned runs on four hits, but picked up the loss in the circle, while Green, Reese and
Bethany Allen were responsible for the Reddies' three hits.
GAME TWO: No. 5 Southern Arkansas 9, Henderson State 1
SAU used three runs in both the first and second innings of game two, to get past Henderson in five innings and sweep Sunday's doubleheader.
The Lady Muleriders got going early in the second game, and used a bases-loaded double from Marina Duran to score three quick runs and jump in front 3-0. SAU continued its offensive avalanche in the second inning, and used four hits to score three runs and open up a 6-0 advantage.
After an RBI sac fly made it 7-0 SAU in the third inning, Henderson got one run back in the fifth, when
Madie Green singled to score
Nadia Ballarin and cut the deficit to 7-1. The Lady Muleriders ended things in the bottom half of the inning, however, as Hailey Saintignan hit a two-run blast out to right field to make it 9-1 SAU and bring the run-rule into effect.
The Reddies had six hits in the game, two of which came from Green, but the Lady Muleriders racked up 11 and had a hit in every inning.
