Timely Runs Lift Oklahoma Baptist Over Henderson, 89-77

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Henderson State got 16 points from Joshua Jones, but Oklahoma Baptist used a big run in the second half to pull away from the Reddies 89-77 on Thursday night in the Noble Complex.

Jones' season-high 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting and five rebounds led the Reddies offensively. Rel Johnson added 14 points and both Tanner Hamilton and Anthony Lupardus each chipped in 11.

Henderson (8-4, 3-3) used 10 early points from Jones to build a lead as large as 32-27 with five minutes to go in the first half, but OKBU used a timely12-2 run to close the period and take a 39-34 advantage into the break. The Reddies hit on just one of their last 11 shots to end the half.

The Bison (5-6, 4-1) extended their lead out to double digits, 46-36, in the opening minutes of the second half, but HSU responded by trimming the deficit back down to 49-44 at the 15:31 mark with a quick 8-3 spurt of its own.

The Reddies' run only stemmed the tide for a moment, however, as OKBU threw a haymaker over the next five minutes, ripping off an 18-5 stretch which helped the Bison open up a commanding 67-49 advantage with just over 10 minutes to play.

HSU showed grit and used a 17-9 stretch of its own to claw its way back within 76-66 with 5:18 left, but Oklahoma Baptist shut the door on a comeback with a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half and pulled away for the 89-77 win.

The Bison finished with 19 second-chance points which hurt Henderson and hit six of their first eight 3-point attempts in the second half.

Henderson plays again on Saturday when it takes on No. 14 Southern Nazarene at 3 p.m. in Bethany, Oklahoma.
