ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Karrington Whaley poured in a career-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and
Pink Jones stuffed the box score with 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, but the Reddies were unable to climb out of a double-digit halftime deficit and fell to Southern Nazarene 55-48.
The Reddies held SNU to just 30.5 percent on 18-for-59 shooting, but were unable to get their own offense going and shot just 29.8 percent from the floor on the night.
HSU (13-6, 8-5) is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when the Reddies host Oklahoma Baptist at 1 p.m.
1st Quarter
The Crimson Storm got the game going with a bucket in the opening minute, but it was their last make from the floor in the quarter.
Blu Jones tied the game at two with a pair of free throws and
Pink Jones found Whaley for an easy layup, giving the Reddies their first lead of the evening, 4-2. SNU tied the score with two free throws and after a five-minute stretch where neither team scored,
Blu Jones ended the first quarter with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Reddies a 9-4 lead at the end of the first frame.
Â
2nd Quarter
Unfortunately it was the Reddies who were unable to find their offense in the second period. Henderson did not make a field goal until the 3:43 mark of the quarter, as SNU went on a 13-1 run to take a 17-10 advantage. A
Maci Mains 3-pointer at the conclusion of the half gave the Reddies a bit of momentum heading into the halftime break, but the Reddies were outscored 21-6 in the second quarter and trailed 25-15 at the break.
Â
3rd Quarter
After an inconsistent first half, both teams settled down in the third. The Reddies looked to snatch momentum back and cut the SNU lead to eight on a layup from Whaley, but the Crimson Storm answered with a 6-0 spurt to push their lead out to 14 points, 31-17. The Reddies went on an 8-0 run of their own, capped by a driving runner by
Lani Snowden, but the third quarter ended exactly how it started, as SNU lead by 10 points, 41-31.
Â
4th Quarter
The Reddies started hot in the fourth and final frame and used a long jumper from
Lexis Weber, along with six-straight points from
Pink Jones, to close the gap to three, 44-41. After an inside finish from SNU,
Blu Jones stepped out to the right corner and drilled her second 3-pointer of the game, cutting the deficit to 46-44 with 4:25 to play. The Reddies got two-straight stops, but were unable to tie or take the lead as the game wound under the three-minute mark. The evening's deciding play came with two seconds on the shot clock, when Southern Nazarene guard Madeline Schroepfer stepped out and knocked down a heavily guarded three-pointer from the right corner to extend SNU's lead to five points with under three minutes remaining. The shot proved to be a dagger, as the Reddies ran out of time and fell 55-48.
