Reddies Sweep Weekend Roadtrip with Win at SNU

BETHANY, Okla. – The Reddies responded from a 2-1 set deficit to sweep the weekend in the Sooner State as HSU defeated Southern Nazarene 3-2 (24-26, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 19-17).

The win gave the Reddies their third straight victory which marks the longest winning streak of the season. 

Henderson State was led by Courney Bolf, Adrianna Hartmann, and Sabrina Show, who combined for 47 of the Reddies' 67 kills. Bolf added a season-high 31 digs while Abby Blackburn and Taylor Scalzi notched 53 assists between the two of them. HSU also got excellent defensive performances from Bree Sanders and Alex Tyler. Sanders finished with a career-high 10 blocks while Tyler added seven of her own. 

Henderson State (11-9, 4-3) will take a break from GAC action when they travel to Memphis, Tennessee take on Lemoyne-Owen on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. 

SET ONE
Following six alternating points to begin the match, SNU made the first move of the morning with an 8-3 run which put them in front 11-6. Trailing 14-9, HSU put its first spurt together behind kills from Show, Bolf, and Tyler before taking a 16-15 lead. For the second time in the set, the Crimson Storm built a five-point lead, 23-18, but HSU responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set 23-23. The Reddies were unable to pull in front as SNU took the first set 26-24.

SET TWO
Neither team could find a rhythm early in the second set as the Reddies found themselves playing catch-up with SNU in front 10-9. A kill from Hartmann tied the set at 10, and Crimson Storm mistakes allowed the Reddies to build their largest lead of the match, 14-10. Southern Nazarene crawled back to tie the set 19-19, but Henderson State kept the SNU offense off balance for the remainder of the frame as the Reddies tied the match 26-24.

SET THREE
Henderson State appeared to take control in the third set with as the Reddies took the first four points, but a lengthy 11-3 run from SNU put the Crimson Storm back in front 11-7. Henderson responded with an 8-2 spurt to take a 15-13 lead, but were unable to stay in front, as SNU came back to win six of the next seven points to take a 19-16 lead. For the first time in the match, there were no late-set dramatics as the Crimson Storm cruised to a 2-1 advantage, 25-19.

SET FOUR
The Reddies and the Crimson Storm were evenly matched in the inception of the fourth frame as the two GAC foes traded leads six times before finding themselves tied 12-12. Looking to make a move, a powerful kill from Hartmann jump-started a lightning quick 4-0 spurt which put HSU in front 16-12. SNU would tie the set at 19-19, but were unable to take the lead as the Reddies finished the set on a 6-2 run, tying the match at 2-2.

SET FIVE
Henderson State was in a constant state of catch-up in the fifth and final frame as they trailed SNU 3-1, 6-4, 10-7, and 12-10, before being pushed to the brink as the Crimson Storm led 14-12. A service error quickly made it 14-13 before a rare kill from Scalzi tied the set at 14-14. Henderson State fought off match-points at 15-14, and 16-15 before another Crimson Storm error gave HSU their first lead of the set with the score 17-16. Southern Nazarene tied it once more, at 17-17, but an attack error from SNU, and a kill from Hartmann gave the Reddies a dramatic 3-2 win, 19-17.
