SWOSU Outlasts Henderson in Five-Set Thriller

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Courtney Bolf's big afternoon was not enough for Henderson State on Saturday as the Reddies fell 3-2 in a slugfest to Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Bolf nearly willed the Reddies to victory with a team-high 18 kills and 28 defensive digs. Kenzie Thoman added 32 digs, while Abby Blackburn finished with 31 assists. Sabrina Show also chipped in 17 kills in defeat.

HSU was out-hit 19.2% to 14.2% and struggled with errors, committing 33 in the match to just 19 for SWOSU.

Henderson returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. when it travels across the street to face rival Ouachita Baptist.

SET ONE
It was all SWOSU to start the match, as the Bulldogs opened the day on a 6-0 run. Gradually Henderson began to crawl back, but SWOSU still held the upper hand with a 22-19 lead in the waning moments of the set. The Reddies turned the tables on SWOSU, however, and finished the frame on a big 6-1 spurt to rally and win it 25-23.

SET TWO
SWOSU duplicated its hot start from the first set in the second and seized a commanding 16-6 advantage out of the gate. The Reddies did their best to cut into the lead, eventually trimming the deficit down to 22-18, but the Bulldogs held on this time and took the set 25-20.

SET THREE
The third frame proved to be much closer at the outset, but with the score tied at 12-12 it was SWOSU who found the big run, as the Bulldogs used a 5-0 spurt to open up a 17-12 lead. The stretch proved to be a back-breaker, as SWOSU ended the set on a 13-4 run to win it 25-16.

SET FOUR
With their backs against the wall, the Reddies responded in the fourth. With the set knotted at 9-9-, Henderson made a move, and used a 9-2 run to seize an 18-11 lead. Although the Bulldogs did cut the deficit down to four points on two occasions, they came no further, as HSU took the frame 25-17 to force a fifth and final set.

SET FIVE
The Reddies had their chances in the last set, but SWOSU proved too much down the stretch. In a 5-5 tie, SWOSU went on a 5-1 run to open a 10-6 advantage. HSU refused to roll over but after trimming the lead down to 11-9 ran out as gas, as the Bulldogs pulled away and took the match with a 15-11 victory.
