Reddies Fall 3-1 in GAC Quarterfinals to SNU

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Adrianna Hartmann, Tyasia McGruder, and Sabrina Show all notched double-digit kills, but the Reddies fell to the No. 4 seed Southern Nazarene in the GAC quarterfinal, 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-10).

The loss ended another successful season for Henderson State volleyball, which won 21 matches and secured back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in almost 20 years.

Taylor Scalzi finished with the lone double-double for HSU with 19 assists and 11 digs, while Abby Blackburn added 14 helpers. MaKenzie Thoman led the Reddies with 21 digs.

SET ONE
Southern Nazarene dominated the early portion of Thursday's match and took the first five points on the way to a 7-2 lead. HSU fought back to make it 8-6, but a 7-4 SNU stretch helped the Crimson Storm regain a five-point lead, 15-10. With SNU leading 22-18, the Reddies ripped off an impressive 5-0 run to take their first lead of the match, 23-22. Unfortunately, HSU could not hold its advantage, as SNU took three-straight points to end the set and take the lead, 25-23.

SET TWO
Despite missing an opportunity in the opening frame, the Reddies came out focused in the second set and led 6-4. With the score 8-6, Courtney Bolf gave HSU back-to-back aces as Henderson opened up their largest lead, 10-6. The comfort only lasted for a short while however as SNU took six of the next nine points to cut the Reddies' lead to one, 13-12. After a McGruder kill that helped the Reddies to a 3-0 spurt and a 16-12 lead, the Crimson Storm played catch-up for the second time as they made the score 19-18, Reddies. Again, Henderson rebuffed the Crimson Storm comeback as HSU ended the set on a 6-2 run to tie the match 25-20.

SET THREE
SNU and HSU alternated runs to begin the third set as SNU started with a 3-0 spurt, answered by a 5-0 run from the Reddies that had them in front by two. With the score 5-3 Henderson, Southern Nazarene responded with a 7-2 run of their own to pull in front by three, 10-7. Although the Reddies would come back to tie the set and make the score 14-14, 16-16, and 18-18, HSU was never able to pull in front as SNU ended the frame on a 7-3 run to take a 2-1 set lead, 25-21.

SET FOUR
Unfortunately for the Reddies, the fourth set started much like the first, as SNU took the first three points before running to an 11-4 lead. Henderson State could never stop the Crimson Storm's momentum as the Reddies could not muster back-to-back points for the entirety of the final frame. Southern Nazarene ended the set on a dominant 12-3 run, ending the Henderson State season, 25-10.
