Henderson Women Trounce Arkansas Tech 89-71

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State was one 3-point field goal away from tying a school record, as the Reddies connected 17 times from behind the arc in Saturday's 89-71 win over Arkansas Tech.

Hailey Estes tied a career-high with 26 points and made eight 3-pointers while collecting her second-straight double-double. Karrington Whaley notched her second straight double-double as well, tallying 10 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Although Henderson (4-1, 2-0) fell just short of the three-point record, a school record was set on Saturday afternoon as Pink Jones set a new program-high for assists in a game with 14. The senior added eight points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

After some early season struggles, Blu Jones broke out with a season-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including a 4-for-7 mark from 3-point range. Sophomore Lani Snowden was excellent on both ends, scoring 12 points and limiting Arkansas Tech's leading scorer to a 6-of-22 shooting performance.

Henderson State has now won three-straight wins over Arkansas Tech for the first time since the 2004-06 seasons.

The Reddies will take a break from GAC action when they host Missouri Southern State on Nov. 26 at 5:30 p.m.

1st Quarter
Both teams got off to quick starts offensively, as Henderson State and Arkansas Tech alternated 5-0 runs to begin the game. ATU built up a four-point lead, 9-5, but the five-straight points from Blu Jones, which was followed by five-straight from Estes completed a 10-2 spurt that put the Reddies in front 15-11. After ATU answered with another 5-0 run to go in front 16-15, the Reddies ended the quarter on a 11-5 run to take a 26-21 lead after 10 minutes of action.

2nd Quarter
Henderson's offense didn't miss a beat in the second quarter, as Blu Jones, Estes, Pink Jones, and Lexis Weber got on the score sheet and put the Reddies up seven, 35-28. Following an offensive foul from ATU's Lycia Peevy, Estes drilled her fourth 3-pointer of the first half to give HSU their first double-digit lead, 38-28. After HSU and ATU traded buckets to make the score 44-36, two more 3-pointers from Lani Snowden gave Henderson an 8-2 run to end the half and a 52-38 advantage.

3rd Quarter
Hailey Estes picked up right where she left off in the first half, drilling her fifth 3-pointer of the contest on the first possession of the third quarter to give HSU its largest lead, 55-38. With the score 58-40, Arkansas Tech ratcheted up the pressure, forcing the Reddies into three turnovers during an 11-0 run that cut HSU's lead to seven, 58-51. With the Reddies desperately searching for offensive answers, Pink Jones found Blu Jones in the corner for a 3-pointer that put HSU back up by double-digits, 61-51. Henderson State turned it over nine times in the third quarter, but finished a blistering 6-for-7 from 3-point range in the quarter, as the Reddies held a 74-63 lead heading into the fourth.

4th Quarter
For the first time, both teams struggled to score in the opening moments of the fourth quarter. Through the first six minutes of action, HSU and ATU combined for just nine total points as the Reddies maintained a double-digit lead, 79-67. Following a media timeout, the Reddies went on an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 87-67 before cruising to a 2-0 start in conference play with an 89-71 victory.
