ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State put up 11 runs on Friday evening but committed a season-high six errors and fell to No. 13 Southern Arkansas 15-11 at Clyde Berry Field in the Great American Conference opener for both teams.
The Reddies (3-4, 0-1) had seven different players record hits in the game but left 15 runners on base and issued 11 walks in the loss. The Muleriders capitalized on HSU's mistakes and cashed in four unearned runs in a high-scoring affair that featured just one full inning without a score from either side.
Henderson got on the board early with two runs in the first inning, courtesy of a bases-loaded walk from
Joseph Shepherd and a sacrifice fly from
Ryan Wieligman which scored
Joe Myers.
SAU (5-3, 1-0) answered with four runs in the top of the second to go up 4-2, and after the Reddies plated a runner in the bottom half, the Muleriders scored four more in the third to open up an 8-3 advantage.
The Reddies erased the five-run deficit in the blink of an eye, as a bases-loaded walk from
Brandon Pollock made it 8-4 and a two-out grand slam on a 0-2 pitch from
Danny Mitchell Jr. evened things up at 8-8 in the bottom half of the third.
The Muleriders used a pair of doubles and an error to score two runs in the fourth and retake the lead, 10-8, then extended the lead back out to five runs with three more scores in the fifth.
The team traded runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, but with the Reddies behind 14-9, Henderson came as close as it had been in three innings after a two-run bomb from
Josh Aguilar in the seventh cut the lead to 14-11. SAU slammed the door down the stretch, however, and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to secure a win in the series' opening game.
Blake Wynn,Â
Bryson Haskins, and Wieligman each had two hits on the night for the Reddies. Mitchell Jr. finished with four RBIs which all came from his grand slam in the third.
Henderson and Southern Arkansas will duel again tomorrow in a doubleheader set for 1 p.m. at Clyde Berry Field.
