WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Henderson State got 20 points from Pink Jones, but a big second quarter run from No. 7 Southwestern Oklahoma put the Reddies in a hole too big to dig out of on Thursday night, as they fell to the Lady Bulldogs 86-77.
The Reddies (17-8, 12-7) jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the game's opening minutes and led 27-26 with 6:44 to go until halftime, but SWOSU (24-1, 19-0) used a back-breaking 23-2 run to end the first half and take a commanding 49-29 advantage into the break.
Henderson clawed its way back into the game in the third period, when the Reddies opened the quarter on a 16-3 run to trim the deficit down to just 52-45 at the 3:40 mark. HSU out-scored the Lady Bulldogs 22-9 in the quarter and trailed just 58-51 going into the game's final 10 minutes.
A put-back bucket from Brittany Branum to start the fourth brought the Reddies as close as they had been all evening, 58-53, but they would come no closer, as SWOSU responded with an 11-2 spurt to regain control. Henderson never truly threatened again as the Lady Bulldogs held on to remain unbeaten in GAC play.
Jones led all scorers with 20 points and also chipped in seven rebounds and four assists. Lexis Weber, who got the start, had one of her best games of the season and finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Hailey Estes had a double-double of her own with 13 points and 10 boards.
The Reddies turned the ball over 19 times in the game which led to 25 SWOSU points.
Henderson plays its final road game of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it takes on Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma.
