Tech Takes Two from Henderson on Sunday in Russellville

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Henderson State fought back in both games on Sunday against Arkansas Tech, but could not come away with a win, as the Wonder Boys swept the doubleheader at Baswell Field.

The Reddies (3-8, 0-5) and Wonder Boys play the final game of the Great American Conference series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Russellville, Arkansas.

Game 1: Arkansas Tech 10, Henderson State 6
After falling behind early, the Reddies scraped their way back into the first game on Sunday, but could not climb all the way out of the hole, as the Wonder Boys claimed a 10-6 win.

Tech used six hits, which included a grand slam in the first inning, to score six runs and open up a 6-0 lead after two on Henderson. The Reddies scratched a run in the third, but ATU tacked on three more of its own to open up its largest lead, 9-1.

HSU got a run back in the fifth when Danny Mitchell Jr. scored on a passed ball, then exploded for six hits in the sixth to plate four more and close the deficit down to 9-6.

The Reddies had a chance to make a further dent in the lead, but left the bases loaded to end the inning. The missed opportunity would cost Henderson, as Tech added a run and the next nine HSU batters went down in order to seal it.

Both Blake Wynn and Daniel Colasanto had two hits the in the first game for the Reddies. Colasanto finished with his first two RBIs of the season which came on a single in HSU's big sixth inning.

Game 2: Arkansas Tech 4, Henderson State 3
The Reddies had their chances in the shortened game of the doubleheader, but left nine runners on base and ended up on the losing end of a Wonder Boys' walk-off single in the eighth inning.

Henderson got on the board first when a bunt single from Ryan Wieligman scored Caleb Carr to make it 1-0 in the top of the second.

ATU responded with two runs on a double in the bottom half to take the lead, but the Reddies tied things up in the fourth inning when Mitchell Jr. blasted a double to centerfield to score Bryson Haskins and knot the game at 2-2.

A throwing error on a stolen base attempt from Tech cost HSU in the fifth and allowed the runner to score unearned all the way from second base to put the Wonder Boys up 3-2.

HSU would not go away, though, and again tied things up on a RBI single from Jackson Martin, which plated Wieligman from second base, to even the score at 3-3.

The Reddies had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the eighth inning, when Haskins walked, advanced to second on a fielder's choice, and then made his way to third with just one out on a passed ball. Henderson could not take advantage, however, as a sharp ground ball to the second baseman on HSU's next at-bat got Haskins caught in a rundown on the third base line, where he was tagged out to eliminate the threat.

Arkansas Tech capitalized on the momentum-changing play in the bottom half. A single and a wild pitch moved a runner to third base with two outs for the Wonder Boys and Zack Kesterson came through for ATU with a single to right field which gave Tech the 4-3 win.

Colasanto again had two hits to lead the Reddies, as did Wieligman, who also scored a run and drove in a run in the second game.
