Pitching Gems Go For Naught as HSU Drops Doubleheader to Tech

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Michelle Sorensen and Mallory Brewer both pitched brilliantly on Sunday, but the Reddies were unable to provide either any run support, as Henderson State dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader to Arkansas Tech, 1-0.

Sorensen went all 10 innings for HSU in the second game of the afternoon, striking out 16 batters while allowing just four hits. In her first start of the season, Sorensen did not allow a hit through the first six innings and the only ATU run went unearned. Brewer allowed just five hits and one earned run in seven innings of work in the first contest.

Kailey Reese improved her hitting streak to five games and was a combined 3-for-6 on the afternoon. During the five game streak, Reese is 8-for-17 and has improved her average over .130 points.

The Reddies (6-8, 0-2) will finish the second half of the doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dee White Field.

Game One: Arkansas Tech 1, Henderson State 0
Henderson and Arkansas Tech combined for five scoreless frames before ATU scratched a run in the top of the sixth, and although HSU put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, the Reddies could not score, as Henderson fell 1-0 in the first game on Sunday.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout, as both Mallory Brewer and the Golden Suns' Megan Goodnight were nearly untouchable all day.

In the sixth, Tech's Gaby Vasquez singled and advanced to second after tagging up on a deep fly ball to foul territory in right field. Vasquez scored when ATU chopped a single back up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.

Down to their final three outs, Cecily Rodriguez and Selena Mendoza reached with infield singles and HSU had two runners in scoring position with just one out after Alyssa Dixon pinch ran for Mendoza and immediately stole second. Unfortunately, the Reddies could not plate a run, and ATU escaped with a 1-0 victory.

Game Two: Arkansas Tech 1, Henderson State 0
Neither Henderson nor ATU could get the bats going through the first five innings as both teams combined for just three hits heading into sixth. In the bottom of the inning, the Reddies threatened for the first time after singles from Reese and Abbie Moore gave HSU runners on the corners with one out.

Looking to break the tie, Mendoza axed a ground ball behind the pitcher, but ATU's second baseman Bailey Bunch made a great stop, stepped on second, and fired to first for a double play, preserving a 0-0 ballgame.

The Golden Suns put runners in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth with just one out, but Sorensen responded with back-to-back strikeouts in both situations as the game remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the eighth.

It was in the eighth that the Reddies had their best chance for a walk-off win. Following an error and a sacrifice bunt that sent Ashlyn Taylor to second, Reese singled up the middle, but Taylor was thrown out at the plate courtesy of a perfect throw, catch, and tag by the ATU defense. Although Reese advanced on the throw, the Reddies were unable to break the tie.

In the top of the tenth, ATU pushed across the game's only run. With runners on second and two outs, Tech's Sarah Coronado reached on an error to the right side of the Reddies infield, allowing Megan Goodnight to score. HSU was unable to put the tying run on-base in the bottom of the tenth and fell 1-0.
