ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State played tight with Delta State for eight innings Saturday night, but the Statesmen plated three runs in both the eighth and ninth to pull away from the Reddies for an 8-4 win at Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddies (3-2) struck first in the third, when an error and a passed ball helped HSU score two runs to go up 2-0. Delta State (5-0) answered in the fourth with an RBI triple and an RBI single in back-to-back at-bats to tie the game 2-2, but for the next three innings, that remained the score, as neither team could break away or plate the go-ahead run.
That changed in the top of the eighth when two singles and a wild pitch gave the Statesmen two runners in scoring position with no outs in the inning. DSU shortstop David Sargent came through in the ensuing at-bat, as he knocked a double down the left field line to score two runs and put Delta in front 4-2. Sargent tacked on a fifth run himself minutes later, when he touched home courtesy of a wild pitch, to extend the DSU lead to 5-2.
Needing runs, Henderson found them in the bottom half, as two walks and a hit-by-pitch gave the Reddies the bases loaded with just one out. Bryson Haskins made DSU pay and legged out a fielder's choice RBI, which turned into two runs for HSU on an errant throw from the second baseman, to give the Reddies two quick runs and trim the deficit down to 5-4.
Things got away from the Reddies in the ninth, however. Henderson walked six batters, including the first four of the inning in a row, which led to three runs for Delta State and extended its lead to 8-4. Down to its final three outs, HSU could not find a big rally and fell for the first time since its season opener last Friday.
Henderson scored four runs in the game but had just three hits and took advantage of three Delta State errors. Two of the three hits came from Danny Mitchell Jr., who finished 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Starter Matthew Baker was excellent for the Reddies in his six innings of work and allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out nine.
HSU plays its final game of the weekend tomorrow at 3 p.m. when it faces Arkansas-Fort Smith at Clyde Berry Field.
