MONTICELLO, Ark. — Henderson State battled all afternoon with Arkansas-Monticello, but came up just short in the final moments on Saturday and fell to the Weevils 68-64.
The Reddies (14-8, 9-7) got off to a good start on the road and used seven early points from Chris Parker to open up a 16-10 lead at the 10:35 mark of the first half. UAM answered, however, and used a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to seize a 24-16 lead.Â
The Weevils extended their advantage out to 30-22 with 1:32 left before the break, but the Reddies closed on a 6-1 spurt thanks to 3-pointers from Chris Owens and Rel Johnson to trail just 31-28 at the half.
The Reddies continued to trail in the opening minutes of the second period, but with UAM up 41-36 at the 15:37 mark, HSU put together a 13-5 run behind 11 points from Raekwon Rogers to go back in front 49-46 with just under nine minutes remaining.
The teams proceeded to trade the lead five times over the next four minutes, but with Henderson trailing 58-57, the Weevils threw a huge punch by stringing together a 9-0 run to seize their largest lead of the game, 66-57.
HSU refused to go away and used a quick 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 66-64 with 1:27 to play, but the Reddies could not quite close the gap, as they went scoreless down the stretch and fell to snap a two-game winning streak.
Parker led the Reddies with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, while Rogers chipped in 11 points — all of which came during the big run in the second half — and eight rebounds.
Henderson returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 14, when it hosts rival Ouachita Baptist in the Battle of the Ravine at 7:30 p.m.
