Wild Rally Earns Reddies Series Win Over NWOSU

ALVA, Okla. — Henderson State won the first game 10-7 on Saturday, then, down to its final three outs, erased a four-run deficit in the second, to sweep Northwestern Oklahoma State and steal the road series from the Rangers.

The Reddies' bats were working in the doubleheader, as they racked up 26 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases, in the two games. HSU has now won six of its last seven games and has won two Great American Conference series in a row.

Henderson (11-13, 6-9) will return to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Memphis, Tennessee, to face Christian Brothers at 2 p.m.

Game 1: Henderson State 10, NWOSU 7
The Reddies broke open a 5-5 ballgame with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to take the first game on Saturday 10-7 and even the series at one win apiece.

HSU put two runs up in the first on a home run from Joseph Shepherd, but NWOSU immediately struck with four of its own in the bottom half to seize a 4-2 advantage. A Brandon Pollock-sac fly and a two RBI single from Shepherd in the second inning gave the Reddies three runs and pushed them back in front 5-4 minutes later, but the Rangers tied things up after plating a run in the fifth.

With the game knotted at 5-5 in the sixth, Pollock and Danny Mitchell Jr. came through for HSU when Pollock grounded out to drive in the go-ahead run and Mitchell Jr. smoked a ball deep over the centerfield fence. The two runs gave the Reddies a 7-5 lead, and although NWOSU got one back in the bottom of the inning, Henderson added two more in the seventh without recording a hit, thanks to two walks, a sac fly, and a wild pitch, to strengthen its grip on the game.

Another run courtesy of a Blake Wynn sac fly gave the Reddies a four-run cushion heading to the bottom of the ninth, and that proved to be enough, as they gave up one but held on for the win.

Shepherd had three hits and four RBIs in the game to lead Henderson, while Carr had three hits and scored two runs. Starter Drake Salsman (2-2) got the win after throwing eight innings and giving up seven runs on 10 hits.

Game 2: Henderson State 13, NWOSU 10
Trailing 10-6 in the short game and down to its final three outs, Henderson came up with a four-run bottom half of the seventh inning and added two go-ahead runs in the ninth, to rally and stun NWOSU 13-10 in the second game of the day.

Henderson had faced a 6-3 deficit going into the top of the sixth, but got a home run from Caleb Carr, a double from Daniel Colasanto, and two singles from Hunter Collins and Brandon Pollock, to plate three runs and tie the game at 6-6.

It seemed as though the rally would go for naught in the bottom of the inning, when the Rangers used three hits and three walks to put up for runs and take control of the game, 10-6.

Down to their final three outs, the Reddies wasted no time, as a single from Josh Aguilar, two hit batters, a wild pitch, and a two-RBI double from Carr scored three runs for Henderson without an out being recorded for NWOSU. With runners on the corners and no one out, the Rangers got a pop out in the next at-bat to put one away, but Pollock used a nice piece of hitting to earn a ground out RBI and knot the game at 10-10 in the top of the seventh.

Although NWOSU moved the winning run to second base with just one out in the bottom of the inning, reliever Spencer Taack (2-4) got the final two batters of the frame for the Rangers to fly out and ground out, which sent the game to extras.

After a scoreless eighth from both clubs, Henderson got things going in the ninth. With runners on the corners and two outs, it was Hunter Collins that delivered from the Reddies, as he lined a double into the gap in left center to score both baserunners and give HSU a 12-10 lead — its first since the opening inning. An RBI single from Pollock on the next at-bat extended the lead to three runs and pushed Northwestern to the brink.

A stunned NWOSU team was unable to answer in the bottom of the ninth, as HSU turned a back-breaking double play for the first two outs, and Taack struck out the final Rangers' batter looking to give the Reddies an improbable win and sweep.

Carr shined for the second-straight game and finished with two hits, three runs, and three RBIs, while Collins had a career-outing with three hits and four RBIs. Pollock and Aguilar both had three hits and plated two runs apiece.

Taack picked up his second win of the season out of the pen after pitching the final three innings and allowing just one hit and no runs.
