ARKADELPHIA, Ark –
Pink Jones filled up the stat sheet and
Maci Mains poured in a career high 14 points on Saturday, but the Reddies could not climb out of a double-digit first half deficit and fell to East Central at the buzzer on Senior Day, 67-65.
Jones finished with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal to lead Henderson State. The Reddies shot 52 percent in the second half after trailing by 15 at the break, and hit on 23-of-27 attempts from the free throw line, but Jones' game-winning 3-point attempt at the final horn was long as the Tigers held on to pick up the win.
Henderson State (18-10, 13-9) will be the No. 5 seed in the
Great American Conference Tournament. The Reddies play No. 4 seed Harding at 12 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 8 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
1st Quarter
HSU got off to a poor start in the opening minutes, and trailed 10-4 before getting its first field goal of the game. After a 3-pointer from
Blu Jones cut the lead to three, ECU ended the opening quarter on a 13-2 run, and led 23-9 after 10 minutes.
Â
2nd Quarter
The Reddies scored the first seven points of the second quarter, but back-to-back 3-pointers from ECU's Maci Hanson negated the 7-0 run, as ECU led 29-18 midway through the second period.
Pink Jones drove to the basket for a hoop and the harm to give the Reddies some momentum, but the Tigers threw the final punch of the first half with a lay-up at the buzzer, and took a commanding 36-21 advantage into the half.
Â
3rd Quarter
Henderson State finally got things going after the break. Jumpers from
Blu Jones and
Pink Jones jump-started the Reddies' offense, and after both teams traded buckets, Pink scored seven straight to pull HSU within three, 39-36. After an ECU run pushed the lead back to nine, 49-40, the Reddies ended the third period on a 6-0 spurt of their own to pull within striking distance, 49-46.
Â
4th Quarter
Early in the fourth, it was HSU's underclassmen that stepped up big.
Karrington Whaley made two excellent plays and scored four straight for the Reddies, before a runner by Mains tied the score at 52-52. After a free throw from ECU, Mains knocked down a 3-pointer to give HSU its first lead, 55-53. Mains would hit two more 3-pointers down the stretch, but a clutch basket from ECU's Madison Rehl with six second left proved to be the game's deciding bucket as the Reddies fell 67-65.
