ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State put together a pair of rallies and fought past a scrappy East Central team 9-8 and 11-5 in the two games of Sunday's doubleheader. The Reddies have now won four-straight Great American Conference series.
Caleb Carr had six hits on the day for HSU, while
Brandon Pollock had five.
Brayden Bebee (1-1) picked up his first win of the year in the first game out of the pen and
Zach Eschberger (3-2) won his third of the season in game two.
The Reddies (17-15, 11-10) return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Cleveland, Mississippi, to face No. 14 Delta State at 4 p.m.
Game 1: Henderson State 9, East Central 8
After falling behind by five runs, the Reddies rallied to score seven in the final three innings and stun the Tigers 9-8 in the first game on Sunday.
With ECU already leading 3-2, the Tigers put up four runs on four hits in the sixth and seized a commanding 7-2 lead with a chance to win the series if they could hold on.
Henderson began its climb back in the bottom of the seventh. A ground out RBI from
Hunter Collins scored one for the Reddies, and with two outs in the inning
Danny Mitchell Jr. came through in a big way, as he homered to left field to plate two more and bring HSU within 7-5.
The rally got tougher for Henderson in the eighth when a triple and a single from ECU increased the Tigers' lead to 8-5. The Reddies got the run back in the bottom half on an RBI single from
Greyson Stevens, but could do no more damage, and found themselves down by two runs going to the ninth.
Trailing by two runs with just three outs to work with, HSU did not waste time in the bottom of the ninth. Back–to-back doubles to start the inning from
Blake Wynn and
Brandon Pollock gave the Reddies two runners in scoring position with no outs, and after a pop fly for out number one on the next at-bat,
Joseph Shepherd brought a run in with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to 8-7.
With a runner on second base and trailing by a run with two outs in the inning, it was
Joe Myers who delivered for Henderson, as he floated a double into the left field corner to bring Pollock home and tie the game at 8-8.
A single from Carr and a walk from Stevens in the next two at-bats put tremendous pressure on ECU, as
Bryson Haskins stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and a chance to win it for the Reddies. With a 2-1 count, the Tigers' pitcher lost all command and plunked Haskins in the back, giving him a walk-off hit-by-pitch RBI and Henderson an improbable 9-8 win.
Pollock and Carr each had three hits in the game, while Mitchell Jr. had two RBIs on his team-leading sixth home run of the year. Bebee entered in the sixth inning and got the win after pitching 3 1/3 innings of relief and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five.
Game 2: Henderson State 11, East Central 5
Much like in game one, Henderson fell behind early in the seven-inning contest, but used a big fifth frame to score six runs and pull away for an 11-5 series-clinching win.
ECU scored two runs in both the first and second inning of the second game on Sunday to open up a 4-1 lead. An RBI single from Carr in the third, along with RBIs from Mitchell Jr. and Shepherd in the fourth, tied the game for the Reddies, but the fifth was where HSU blew the contest open.
Henderson wore ECU down in the bottom half of the inning and got four walks, three hits, and an error to score six runs and take complete control with a 10-4 lead. Carr and Shepherd had the two biggest hits in the frame with an RBI triple and double, respectively. The error hurt the Tigers as well, and led to two unearned runs.
East Central, who swung the bats well all series, continued to fight, and got a run back in the sixth, but a double from Haskins, followed by a passed ball and a wild pitch, gave it right back to HSU in the bottom half. The Tigers had no miracle rally in the seventh as Henderson cruised to an 11-5 win to take the series.
Eschberger gave up nine hits and five runs in 5 1.3 innings, but struck out seven in his third win of the year.
Jon Youngblood, who entered in the sixth and pitched the final 1 2/3 struck out three of the seven batters he faced. The Reddies drew eight walks as a team in the win, while Carr led HSU at the plate once again with three hits and two RBIs.
