JACKSON, Tenn. — Henderson State's bats were bottled up on Tuesday night in Tennessee, as Union defeated the Reddies 8-0 in the teams' third meeting this season.
The Reddies (20-20) had their way with the Bulldogs in a 21-0 contest back in February, then defeated them again 4-3 later that month, but Tuesday things finally broke Union's way, as HSU was held to seven hits and no runs in the loss.
The Bulldogs struck first in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead, and after the Reddies stranded two runners in both the second and third innings, Union took advantage with two more runs in the third and one in the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead.
A promising leadoff bunt single from
Hunter Collins in the fifth again failed to bring a run in for Henderson, which proved to be costly in the bottom half of the inning when Union scored twice more without recording a hit to extend its advantage to 6-0.
The next seven batters went down in order for the Reddies, as the Bulldogs tacked on another insurance run in the sixth. Trailing 7-0 in the eighth, Henderson put two runners on base with one out after
Jake Dunn singled and
Joseph Shepherd wore a pitch, but the best threat in several innings went for naught again, as Union got the final two batters to escape unscathed. One final score in the bottom half wrapped it up for the Bulldogs, and HSU went down in order to end it in the ninth.
Joe Myers was the only Reddie with two hits in the game. Both
Jordan Reed and
Blake Pennington saw their first action of the season on the mound for Henderson in the loss. Pennington threw the final three innings and allowed just one run on two hits and struck out three batters.
The Reddies travel to Searcy, Arkansas, this Friday to face Harding in the opening contest of a three-game series at 6 p.m.
