ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got off to a fast start, then used a four-run seventh inning, to pull away and defeat Christian Brothers 8-3 on Wednesday in the final home game of the season.
It did not take long for the Reddies to get going in the final mid-week game of the year. Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases with no outs in the first, and HSU took advantage, as
Caleb Carr,
Bryson Haskins, and
Greyson Stevens each drove in a run to give Henderson a 3-0 lead.
After the Bucs got on the board in the second, the Reddies stole the run right back in the bottom half, when
Hunter Collins drove in
Joe Myers with an RBI single to make it 4-1.
CBU cut the lead to 4-2 and stranded two runners in the fourth, but following three scoreless innings, the Reddies put together the biggest frame of the contest in the seventh. Henderson scored four runs on five hits, the biggest of which was a two-RBI triple from Haskins, to open up a commanding 8-2 advantage.
The Buccaneers refused to go away quietly, and threatened in the eighth when they scored a run and loaded the bases with just one out, but reliever
Spencer Taack got the next two batters swinging to escape the inning without further damage and help the Reddies earn the win.
Henderson starter
Dalton O'Donnell picked up his third win of the season on the mound by pitching six innings and surrendering just two runs on six hits. Every player in the batting lineup recorded a hit in the game for the Reddies, including
Brandon Pollock,
Joseph Shepherd,
Daniel Colasanto, and Collins, who each had two.
HSU will play its final games of the regular season this weekend when it crosses the street to face Ouachita Baptist in a Battle of the Ravine series with major Great American Conference Tournament implications. The Reddies and Tigers will open play on Friday at 3 p.m. and finish the three-game set with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
