Reddies Drop Two Pitcher's Duels to SAU Friday

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Despite commendable pitching performances from both Michelle Sorensen and Becca Almond, the Reddies' lineup was held in check as HSU dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader at No. 19 Southern Arkansas, 2-1 and 1-0.

Sorensen provided the Reddies (25-29, 19-23) with six solid innings of work, allowing just two runs while striking out four. Almond worked a no hitter until the fourth inning, and allowed just one run on four hits.

The series, as well as the regular season, concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader set for 1 p.m.

Game One: Southern Arkansas 2, Henderson State 1
After Southern Arkansas got on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, the Reddies rebounded with a run of their own in the top of the second.

Christianna Camp worked a walk to lead off the inning before advancing into scoring position on a passed ball.

Kailey Reese used a productive out to get Camp to third, and Ashleigh Erb brought her home with an RBI groundout to the right side of the infield, tying the game 1-1.

Unfortunately, the Lady Muleriders were quick to jump back into the lead when they got an RBI single from Sara Evans, who was also responsible for SAU's home run in the first.

Trailing 2-1 after three innings, Henderson State had runners on first and second with just one out in the fourth and fifth innings, but was unable to capitalize.

In the top of the seventh, still down 2-1, Erb singled to lead off the inning for the Reddies and was advanced to second on a sacrifice from Selena Mendoza. Erb moved to third, but was stranded there, and HSU's comeback bid fell short in a 2-1 loss.

Game Two: Southern Arkansas 1, Henderson State 0
In what was a pitcher's duel throughout, Madie Green gave the Reddies life in the top of the fourth with a leadoff double to left field. Two batters later, Monica Monreal singled to right centerfield which sent Green to third.

Alexis Morton pinch ran for Monreal and quickly stole second, giving HSU two runners in scoring position with just one out. The game remained scoreless, however, after a line out and ground out ended Henderson's opportunity.

Following a walk to SAU's leadoff hitter in the bottom of the first, Almond was magnificent through the first four innings of Friday's finale, keeping the Lady Muleriders hitless until the fourth inning.

Southern Arkansas did break through with a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth, but Almond quickly worked out of the jam, inducing a groundout to shortstop Ashlyn Taylor, and a fly out to right fielder Madie Green to end the inning and keep the score 0-0.

Almond was unable to keep SAU off the scoreboard in the fifth however, when the Lady Muleriders got a two-out RBI single to pull in front 1-0. The single run proved to be the difference, as the Reddies were unable to scratch one across, and fell 1-0.
