Volleyball Defeats St. Edward's, Falls to UT-Tyler

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got 21 kills and 30 digs from senior Courtney Bolf and outlasted St. Edward's 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-9) in the first match on Saturday.

The Reddies used a big comeback in the opening set and strong performances in sets three and five to get the win. Sabrina Show had 17 kills and eight digs, while Taylor Scalzi turned in 28 assists and 15 digs to lead Henderson.

In the nightcap and finale of the tournament Henderson fell to UT-Tyler 3-2 (23-25, 28-26, 25-20, 14-25, 12-15) in a hard-fought match. Adrianna Hartmann led the Reddies with 15 kills while Bolf and Show each added 14.

Henderson (2-2) returns to the court on Sept. 13 when they face Texas Women's and Midwestern State in the Dallas Baptist/Texas Women's Crossover in Denton, Texas.

MATCH ONE: Henderson State 3, St. Edward's 2

SET ONE
St. Edward's seemed to be in control throughout the first set and held leads of 15-8 and 21-13 as the Hilltoppers looked to jump in front first. The Reddies, however, had other plans, and finished the frame on a monster 12-2 run to storm back and stun St. Edward's with a 25-23 win to take a 1-0 lead. Show had three kills during the big rally.

SET TWO
After letting a big advantage slip away, the Hilltoppers responded in the second set. Henderson led 15-12 and later 20-18, but it was St. Edward's who flipped the script on Henderson in the second set with a 7-1 run to close the frame. The big spurt at the end lifted the Hilltoppers to a 25-21 win which tied the match.

SET THREE
It was a back-and-forth battle in the pivotal third set, as the two teams traded points for the majority of the frame. With the score knotted at 19-19, it was the Reddies who found the big breakthrough, as three kills from Show led a 5-1 closing run which gave Henderson a 25-21 victory and a 2-1 lead.

SET FOUR
Needing a win to stay alive, St. Edward's did just that in the fourth set. The Hilltoppers got out to a quick 7-4 lead in the early going and eventually extended their advantage out to 20-12. The Reddies put together a 7-2 run to apply pressure and close the gap to 22-19, but St. Edward's held them off and forced a fifth set with a 25-21 win.

SET FIVE
It was Henderson that came up big in the fifth and final frame. Trailing 4-3, the Reddies put together a match-deciding 7-2 run which surged them in front 10-6 and gave them command of the set. The Hilltoppers tried to close the gap and cut the lead down to 12-9 in the final moments, but with HSU up 13-9 freshman McKenzie Tuyo slammed the door with back-to-back aces to end the match and give the Reddies a 15-9 fifth set victory.

MATCH TWO: UT-Tyler 3, Henderson State 2

SET ONE
In what proved to be a theme for the match, the first set was back-and-forth throughout, as the two teams saw ties at 18-18, 21-21, 22-22, and 23-23. With the set in the balance, UT-Tyler got a kill and a Reddie attack error to claim the first frame, 25-23.

SET TWO
The Reddies got off to a great start in the second and opened up a lead of 18-11 as they tried to even the match. The Patriots came flying back, however, and used a 13-4 run to seize a 24-22 advantage and a chance to take complete control. With their backs against the wall, the Reddies responded. A kill from Hartman, followed by two from Show, powered a 3-0 spurt which put Henderson back in front 25-24. After two-straight from UT-Tyler again gave the Patriots set-point at 26-25, the Reddies fought through it once more behind two more kills from Hartmann and one from Bolf, which gave HSU a 28-26 win to tie the match.

SET THREE
The third frame was again tight throughout, but with UT-Tyler up 20-19, the Reddies made their move. Four-straight Henderson kills, three of which came from Tyasia McGruder, helped power a huge 6-0 run to end the set which lifted HSU to a 25-20 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

SET FOUR
Needing a win to stay alive, UT-Tyler controlled the fourth set from the get-go. Leading 12-11 in the frame, the Patriots finished on a dominant 13-3 run to take it 25-14 and force a fifth and final set.

SET FIVE
Henderson jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the fifth, but UT-Tyler came back and won 11 of the next 15 points to seize a 12-8 lead and push the Reddies to the brink. HSU tried to rally one final time and went on a 4-0 run behind three kills from Hartmann to tie the set 12-12, but it was not to be, as the Patriots took the final three points to win the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
