Henderson Falls Late in Overtime Loss at SNU

BETHANY, Okla. — Henderson State used a 13-0 run to take a six-point lead with two minutes to play on Thursday night, but Southern Nazarene rallied late to send the game into overtime and pulled away in the extra period to defeat the Reddies 79-71 at the Sawyer Center.

The Reddies (13-6, 8-5) led 31-30 after a tight first half, but SNU got things going at the start of the third, as the Crimson Storm opened the quarter on a 14-3 run behind eight points from Myriam Garcia to take a 44-34 lead — their largest advantage of the game. Henderson had an answer, however, and closed the gap down to 48-43 heading into the final period thanks to driving layups from Hailey Estes, Karrington Whaley and Pink Jones.

The big run that the Reddies had been looking for all game finally came in the fourth. Trailing 58-51 with 5:39 remaining, Henderson found its offensive spark in the form of Mains, who drilled three-straight 3-pointers to fuel a huge 13-0 run and give HSU a 64-58 advantage with 1:59 left.

Unfortunately for HSU, the six-point lead — the Reddies' largest of the game — would not hold up. The Crimson Storm got timely stops and forced turnovers on defense to power a 6-0 spurt, which was capped by a banking runner in the lane with 1.6 seconds to go from Alexus Jones, to tie the game 64-64 and send the contest into overtime.

Riding the momentum of its big run to end regulation, Southern Nazarene controlled the overtime period. With the game knotted at 68-68, the Crimson Storm scored the next eight points to seize a 76-68 lead and never looked back, as they pulled away for the 79-71 win.

Whaley led the way for Reddies with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Mains added 18 points and Hailey Estes finished with 16. HSU turned the ball over 23 times in defeat and was just 2-of-10 from the floor in overtime. SNU out-scored Henderson 21-7 in the game's final seven minutes of play after giving up the 13-0 run.

The Reddies return to action on Saturday when they face Oklahoma Baptist at 1 p.m. in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
