ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After dropping a hard-fought game on the road to Southern Nazarene on Thursday, Henderson State will aim to split its weekend road trip to the Sooner State when it faces Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
REDDIES REPORT
- The Reddies (14-5, 9-4) came up just short against Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma on Thursday night, falling 71-67 in the final moments. Henderson shot 49.1% and out-rebounded SNU 35-22 but the Crimson Storm got 25 points on nine shots from Tyler Williams and forced 21 HSU turnovers to earn the victory. The contest was SNU's closest GAC game at home this season.
- Raekwon Rogers had a big night against the Storm on Thursday and finished with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting and also grabbed 12 rebounds. The junior from Little Rock is now ninth in the GAC in rebounding (7.3 per game) and second in field goal percentage (58.7%).
- With the loss, Henderson drops down into a tie for second-place in the GAC standings alongside SNU who it split the season series with. Both teams trail first-place Southeastern Oklahoma State by a single game. The Reddies have won eight of their last 11 games and their three losses have come by a combined 12 points on the road.Â
- HSU entered Thursday's game No. 2 in all of NCAA DII in field goal percentage defense but fell to No. 5 in the nation following the loss to SNU. The Crimson Storm shot 49% from the floor in its win — the highest shooting percentage by a Reddies' opponent this season. Henderson remains one of just eight teams in the country that is holding its opponents to a shooting percentage of under 40% for the year.Â
- The Reddies have had recent success against Oklahoma Baptist, winning the last two over the Bison, but have struggled on the road in Shawnee. HSU is 4-1 against OKBU all-time in the Duke Wells Center but just 1-3 against the Bison on the road. Henderson's last road victory over Oklahoma Baptist came on Jan. 26, 2017 when it outlasted OKBU 84-75.
SCOUTING OKLAHOMA BAPTIST
- OKBU comes into Saturday's game 12-7 on the year and 7-6 in GAC play. The Bison are 3-3 in their last six conference games and fell on Thursday night to Ouachita Baptist 64-62. Oklahoma Baptist is led by head coach Jason Eaker who is in his second season in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
- Oklahoma Baptist's leading scorer is Jaquan Simms, who averages 12.8 points per game. The Bison also lean on forward Dishon Lowry, who transferred last season from Wofford, and gives them 8.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. OKBU is a strong rebounding team that ranks No. 1 in the GAC in rebounding defense (31.7 allowed per game to opponents) and third in rebounding margin (+5.3). The Bison are also one of the better 3-point shooting teams in the league and have hit 185 total 3-pointers this year.
- Like most of the league, the Bison are a much better team at home this season. Thursday's loss to Ouachita was Oklahoma Baptist's first home defeat of the year and snapped a seven-game win streak at the Noble Complex. OKBU is 18-5 at home since the beginning of the 2018-19 season. The Bison still have HSU, ECU, SNU, SAU and Southeastern Oklahoma remaining on their home schedule this year.Â
