ALVA, Okla. — Henderson State got 17 points from Maci Mains and 15 from Lani Snowden to defeat Northwestern Oklahoma State 73-64 on Thursday night at Percefull Fieldhouse.
Mains and Snowden combined for 32 points and nine 3-pointers in the win, while Pink Jones nearly notched a triple-double with six points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Hailey Estes, who finished with eight points and nine boards, broke Henderson's all-time rebounding record in the victory, surpassing Dulincia Keener's previous record of 800.
It was a quick start for the Reddies (10-3, 5-2) on the road, as 3-pointers from Estes and Snowden powered HSU to a 12-2 lead to open the game. NWOSU responded, however, and used a 9-2 run over the remainder of the first quarter to trim the deficit down to 14-11 after one.
The Lady Rangers' run continued in the second, as they scored the first four points of the period to surge to a 15-14 lead. With the game tied 24-24 at the 3:55 mark, the Reddies put together an 8-2 run to end the quarter thanks to 3-pointers from Snowden and Mains, as well as a put-back from Lexis Weber, and took a 32-26 lead into the half. HSU was just 4-for-19 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play, but out-rebounded NWOSU 28-18.
A 10-3 run to open the second half helped Northwestern regain a 36-35 advantage at the under-five minute media timeout in the third, as Henderson began the period 1-of-12 from the floor. With HSU down 39-35, Snowden helped the Reddies get back on track and cashed in on two 3-pointers in the last two minutes of the quarter to help fuel a 15-5 spurt and give Henderson a 50-44 lead heading into the fourth.
Back-to-back buckets from Blu Jones and Pink Jones to start the final quarter earned the Reddies their largest advantage of the night, 55-44 with eight minutes remaining. Although NWOSU did cut the deficit down to seven points with 6:29 to go, Mains and Snowden made sure the lead would not slip away, as the pair knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in a span of two minutes to give Henderson full control and help the Reddies pull away for a 73-64 win.
Henderson shot just 36.8% from the floor in the game but 53.3% in the fourth quarter and out-rebounded the Lady Rangers 46-38. The Reddies also played terrific defense all evening on NWOSU's Bailey Brown and Kalea King, who entered the game averaging 16.2 and 14.2 points per game, respectively. The dynamic duo was held to 11 total points and a combined 4-of-18 shooting from the floor.
The Reddies return to action on Saturday when they travel to Weatherford, Oklahoma to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m.
