ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State had all five seniors score in double figures and ran away from Northwestern Oklahoma State 91-72 on Senior Day at the Duke Wells Center.
The win improved the Reddies (19-7, 14-6) to a final record of 13-1 at home this season. HSU's 14th conference victory set a new record for league wins since Henderson joined the GAC in 2011. With two conference games remaining in the regular season, the Reddies remain one game back of first-place in the GAC standings.
It was all HSU in the early going on Saturday. With the score tied 9-9, the Reddies used four 3-pointers to put together a 15-3 run over the next four minutes and take a 26-12 lead at the 12:57 mark. The lead grew to as many as 18 points in the first half for Henderson, but NWOSU continued to scrap and eventually cut the deficit down to 51-41 at the break.
The Rangers continued to hang around for the start of the second half, twice cutting the Reddies' lead down to just seven points. Leading 65-57 with 12 minutes remaining, Henderson began to find a groove due in large part to its defense.
HSU held Northwestern without a field goal for over six minutes and used 3-pointers from
Rel Johnson and
Anthony Lupardus to jump-start a 12-4 run which pushed the advantage out to 77-61 with 5:50 to play. The result was never in question again. Henderson was able to play and recognize all five seniors down the stretch as it pulled away for its fourth-straight win.
All five players in double figures for HSU were seniors.
Anthony Lupardus led the Reddies with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
Chris Owens finished with 14 off of the bench, while
Mike Fofana had 11, seven rebounds and five assists, and both
Tanner Hamilton and Johnson added 10.
Henderson hit 12 3-pointers in the win and out-scored NWOSU 16-0 in fast break points. The Reddies turned it over just 10 times and forced 19 giveaways from the Rangers, which led to a 22-9 differential in points off turnovers in HSU's favor.
The Reddies control their own destiny for a top-two seed at the GAC Tournament and will look to take a big step towards securing it on Thursday, Feb. 27 when they travel to Durant, Oklahoma to face Southeastern Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m.
