DURANT, Okla. — Henderson State was stung by terrific shooting from Southeastern Oklahoma State on Thursday night and fell to the Savage Storm 94-78 at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
SOSU was on fire to start from the 3-point line and hit three of its first four from outside to take a 15-12 lead at the first media timeout. An 11-2 run to close the quarter put the Savage Storm firmly in the driver's seat, as the Reddies (18-9, 13-8) found themselves down 23-14 after one.
The hot shooting continued in the second for Southeastern. The Storm knocked down four more 3-pointers and shot 66.7% from the floor to put up 32 points in the period and take a commanding 55-39 advantage into the break. The 16-point halftime deficit was the largest of the year for Henderson.
The Reddies attempted to rally to begin the third quarter behind their bench, and used seven points from Maci Mains and six from Gracie Raby to open the period on a 19-10 run which trimmed the deficit down to just 65-58 at the 2:53 mark. Southeastern regrouped, however, and closed the quarter on a 10-2 spurt which reestablished a 15-point advantage, 75-60, with 10 minutes left.Â
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Hailey Estes and Lani Snowden in the first three minutes of the fourth helped cut the lead to 79-68 for the Reddies at the 6:56 mark, but HSU would get no closer, as the Savage Storm answered with a quick 5-0 run and salted the game away down the stretch to split the season series with Henderson.
Mains was fantastic for the Reddies in defeat and finished with a career-high 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Karrington Whaley had 14 points and 11 rebounds to notch a double-double, while Estes added 14 on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range.Â
SOSU shot 55.2% from the floor for the game — the best shooting percentage for a Henderson opponent this season — and got 60 combined points from Katie Webb and Camryn Cantwell.
HSU will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it travels to Ada, Oklahoma to face East Central.
