Reddies' Bats Locked Down Sunday by TAMUK, CBU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State's bats were held in check on Sunday as the Reddies managed just three runs on 10 hits in a pair of losses at Dee White Field.

The Reddies fell 9-0 to No. 1 Texas A&M-Kingsville and 6-3 in the weekend finale to Christian Brothers.

Freshman Kaitlyn O'Quinn was the only HSU batter to collect hits in both games and has now hit safely in her first eight appearances as a Reddie.

Czoey White went 3-for-3 with a solo home run for the Reddies against Christian Brothers in the second half of the doubleheader.

Henderson State (4-4) returns to the diamond next weekend in Bentonville, Arkansas when it plays four contests in the Alvy Early Memorial Classic.

Game 1: No. 1 Texas A&M-Kingsville 9, Henderson State 0
Mallory Brewer and some impressive defense kept the Reddies in the contest against the nation's top ranked team. With a Javelinas runner on first and two outs in the top of the third, Anastasia Leibas rocketed a single off the center field wall. Yvonne Castillo rounded third and headed for home, but was thrown out at the plate 8-3-2 to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

The very next inning, TAMUK used back to back singles to put pressure on HSU. The next batter lifted a flyball to deep center and the runners attempted to tag and advance, but the Reddies used quick thinking and grabbed the first two outs of the inning with an 8-5-4 double play.

Unfortunately, the Reddies lineup couldn't get anything going against Kingsville's ace, Saidi Castillo, who entered the game 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA.

Henderson State threatened in the first after O'Quinn singled before stealing second and third, but Castillo struck out back-to-back batters to get out of the inning.

After the Javelinas tagged HSU with four runs in the top of the fifth, the Reddies grabbed consecutive two-out singles from Kailey Reese and Abbie Moore but could not bring either home when Castillo notched her sixth strikeout of the day.

Kingsville put it out of reach in the top of the seventh with five runs in the top of the seventh behind a grand slam from Claire Chernosky and won 9-0.

Game 2: Christian Brothers 4, Henderson State 1
Henderson State got on the board for the first time on Sunday in the bottom of the second when the newcomer White turned on a pitch and sent it deep over the left field wall to give the Reddies a 1-0 lead.

The Reddies had a chance to double the lead in the next inning when O'Quinn laced one into the left field gap and turned on the jets before coasting into third with a standup triple. Moments later, the CBU infield flashed the leather as the first baseman made a shoestring catch and threw behind O'Quinn at third for the double play.

Becca Almond, HSU's starter appeared to be rolling along in the top of the fifth after retiring the first two batters of the inning. With nobody on base, the Lady Bucs' Ashley Dyer was hit by a pitch, stole second, and came home to score after an error by the Henderson infield which tied the game 1-1.

Similarly to the Texas A&M-Kingsville contest, Christian Brothers broke the game open with five runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to take a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh and with two outs and a runner on first, Morgan Reeve and Alyssa Dixon drew walks to load the bases. Ashlyn Taylor slapped a single back up the box on the first pitch of her at-bat to make it a 6-2 ball game and bring O'Quinn, who represented the tying run to the plate. O'Quinn showed excellent poise at the plate and was eventually hit by a pitch to make it a three-run deficit. Unfortunately, the Reddies comeback stopped there when Reese grounded out to first, ending the inning, and the game, 6-3.
