ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State had its best hitting day of the season on Saturday, combining to score 23 runs in the doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist. The Reddies won the final game of the series 12-6, but fell in the first half of the back-to-back, 11-10.
Henderson freshmen Morgan Reeve and Taylor Sledd each hit home runs in both halves of the doubleheader and combined for 10 RBIs. Kailey Reese led the Reddies in hits on the day, combining to go 5-for-7 with a home run and five RBIs.
Henderson State (7-13, 3-5) will return home next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders with Southern Nazarene.
Game 2: Henderson State 12, Oklahoma Baptist 6
Down 1-0 after an inning of action, the Reddies were quick to answer in the top of the second. With one out, Ashlyn Taylor and Reeve worked back to back walks before Monica Monreal brought Taylor home with a game tying single to left field. Three batters later, HSU took the lead when Kaitlyn O'Quinn drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-1.
The Reddies added to their advantage in the top of the third when Reeve blasted a 3-run home run, her second of the day, to put HSU in front, 5-1. In the very next inning, Henderson went deep again, this time with a grand slam from Sledd which brought home Abbie Moore, Alyssa Dixon, and O'Quinn, which made it 9-1.
Henderson hit its third home run of the game in the top of the seventh when Reese went deep for the first time in the 2020 season. Reese's three-run shot brought home Crysta Larey and Monreal, which gave HSU all the breathing room it would need, as Henderson took the final game of the weekend, 12-6.
Game 1: Oklahoma Baptist 11, Henderson State 10
The Reddies bats were up bright and early on Saturday as Moore and Sledd blasted a pair of two-run home runs to help give Henderson a 5-2 lead after four innings in the first game of the doubleheader.
Henderson added to the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs on three hits, including a solo home run from Reeve which made the score 8-2.
A double off the bat of Reese gave Henderson a 10-3 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, but HSU could not hang on, as Oklahoma Baptist scored one run in the sixth, and then plated seven more in the bottom of the seventh, to steal the win from the Reddies, 11-10.
