MONTICELLO, Ark. — Arkansas-Monticello used a massive run that ended the first half and began the second to swing momentum its way and run away from Henderson State 73-57 on Thursday night in Steelman Field House.
Xavier Davenport led the Reddies with 12 points — all of which came in the first half — while Jeremiah Toney had 11 and Yuri Swinford added 10 points before fouling out in the final minutes.
It was a slow start for Henderson (3-5) on the road, as UAM jetted out to a 21-13 lead in the first eight minutes of play by hitting six of its first seven shots. After settling in, the Reddies responded, and used a 3-pointer from Quawn Marshall, a three-point-play from Swinford and five-straight points from Davenport to power a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes and seize a 28-25 advantage at the 5:21 mark.
The lead grew to as large as four for HSU, 33-29, but with two minutes to go until the half, the Weevils threw a haymaker. UAM hit three-straight 3-pointers and closed the first period on a momentum-stealing 13-2 run to claim a 42-35 lead at the break. Monticello shot 53% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and was 7-of-13 from beyond the arc.Â
An uphill climb got tougher for the Reddies to begin the second, as Raekwon Rogers picked up his third and fourth personal fouls in the first three minutes of the half. Both fouls were ticketed to Rogers on the offensive end of the floor.Â
The Weevils took advantage of the Reddies' misfortune and opened the period on a 17-5 run to take their largest lead, 59-40, with under 10 minutes remaining. HSU was just 2-of-13 from the floor to start the half. The 17-5 stretch for UAM capped a 30-7 run after Henderson took a 33-29 lead.
Facing their largest deficit of the year, the Reddies tried to scrap their way back into it, and trimmed the Weevil lead down to 62-49 with 3:30 to go. That was as close as Henderson got, as UAM never allowed HSU within striking distance late and ran out the clock to claim its Eastern Division-leading sixth win of the season.
Henderson was just 8-for-25 from the floor in the second half. HSU out-scored the Weevils 34-18 in the paint and out-rebounded them 37-26, but finished with 19 turnovers compared to UAM's 10.
The Reddies return home on Saturday when they host Harding at 4 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
