ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Makenzie Thoman moved into fifth all-time on the digs list with 1676 career digs, passing Reddie-great Courtney Bolf (1652), as Henderson State fell Thursday night to nationally ranked Oklahoma Baptist, 3-1. The loss snaps a three-match winning streak HSU had over the Bison.
Thoman, a junior libero from O'Fallon, Missouri, had a match-high 36 digs to commemorate her historic night while
Mya Robinson and
Violeta Mendoza Quintana each held up their averages with another double-double. Robinson saw 11 kills and 25 digs while the junior from Chihuahua, Mexico, claimed 15 kills with 20 digs.
Henderson State (16-7, 5-5) will return to the Duke Wells Center tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. when the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene roll into town.
SET ONE
Play was just about even through the opening frame as HSU hit .192 to OKBU's .197. That slight attacking edge gave the Bison the overall edge in the first frame as they came away with the 25-23 win.
The Reddies made it competitive after OKBU rattled off the first four points of the night. After the Bison saw a 9-5 lead, neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way. The Reddies even saw leads of 12-11, 13-12 and 15-14, but were unable to extend its lead any further, giving Oklahoma Baptist the early nod.
SET TWO
After Henderson claimed the first two points of the second stint, the Bison took control of the match in a big way, going on an 11-0 run that all but did it for the hometown Reddies. With HSU fighting to make it interesting later on with a 5-0 run to close the gap to three at 17-14, OKBU held Henderson at bay the rest of the way to capture a 2-0 match lead, 25-19.
SET THREE
The Bison jumped out to another quick and daunting lead at 8-4, suggesting the home crowd might be in for a sweep. The Reddies refused to lay over, however, as they put together six of the next seven points to rejuvenate the home crowd.
From 14-14, Henderson never looked back, holding the lead all the way until the set's final of 25-21 as play continued inside the Duke Wells Center.
SET FOUR
Neither team was willing to budge an inch as the match stood at a deadlock, 8-8. From there, the defending GAC Champs went on a 7-2 run in what would be the final blow of the night. The momentum shift stayed with Oklahoma Baptist the rest of the way as the No. 23 Bison took set number four, 25-16.
