UAFS Buzzer-Beater Sinks Reddies in Overtime

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Henderson State's Alvin Miles hit a go-ahead shot with 11 seconds remaining in overtime on Saturday, but Arkansas-Fort Smith's Matthew Wilson drained a 3-pointer with one second left on the other end to break the Reddies' hearts and give UAFS an 81-80 win in the instate matchup.

The Reddies had four players in double figures on the road and were led by Franck Kamgain, who had a season-high 17 points and was 5-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. Both Miles and Andre Washington, who was 6-for-7 from the floor, added 14 while Xavier Davenport had 13 and Yuri Swinford finished with 11 and eight rebounds.

Henderson led 40-35 at the half after shooting 50% from the floor in the first 20 minutes and extended its lead out to eight points on two separate occasions in the opening moments of the second period.

With the Reddies up 51-43 at the 13:20 mark, UAFS put together its biggest run of the game and used an 18-9 spurt over the next seven minutes to take its first lead of the half, 61-60, with 6:20 to go. HSU responded with five-straight to go back in front 65-61, but the Lions countered again with a 10-2 run to seize a 70-67 lead with 2:24 remaining.

Facing a deficit with time winding down, Washington came up big for Henderson and scored the last five points of regulation for the Reddies to help them rally and tie the game at 72-72 to send it into overtime. UAFS had two opportunities in the final minute of regulation to take the lead, but both shots came up empty.

The extra period was a back and forth affair as the lead changed hands five times. A 3-pointer by Kamgain and a free throw by Davenport gave HSU a 78-75 lead with 43 seconds remaining, but an old-fashioned three-point-play tied things up for UAFS at 78-78 with 31 seconds to go.

With the contest deadlocked and only 11 seconds remaining, Miles got a jumper in the paint to fall which put the Reddies in front 80-78. Needing one stop, Henderson was left wanting on the other end, as the Lions' Wilson knocked down a 3-pointer at the horn to steal the win for Fort Smith.

After shooting 50% in the opening half, HSU connected on just 36% of its shots in the second. UAFS was just 3-for-12 from the floor in overtime and was 2-for-12 in the final 25 minutes from beyond the arc prior to its game-winning 3-pointer.

The Reddies return home on Wednesday at 2 p.m. when they host Pitt State in their final non-conference game of the season at the Duke Wells Center.
