Reddies Defense Shuts Out OBU on Senior Night

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – In front of the largest crowd to come through the doors of the Duke Wells Center this semester, Henderson State swept Ouachita Baptist for the second time this season, 25-16, 25-15, 28-26. The win gave the Reddies their third 20-win season in four years.

As a team, HSU posted nine service aces and held a .238 attacking percentage in the one-sided affair while holding OBU to a .080 mark. Violeta Mendoza Quintana led the charge with 12 kills while also being responsible for three of those nine aces.

Christiane Uzoh made her presence known on the defensive side of things, coming through with five blocks, including four solo rejections. The freshman also gave Henderson six kills on a .333 attacking percentage.

In their final matches in front of the Reddie faithful, Mya Robinson and Tyasia McGruder saw eight and seven kills, respectively, while Taylor Scalzi came through with a match-high 19 assists and Makenzie Thoman registered a match-high 18 digs along with seven assists.

SET ONE
Ouachita kept it close early on, but the power of HSU proved too much as the set progressed. At 8-4 in favor of the home team, the Reddies went on a 12-5 run to blow the doors open. The Tigers were able to close the 11-point gap slightly, but an ace from junior transfer Dani Dagley sealed the deal for HSU, 25-16.

SET TWO
Henderson needed only 30 total attacks in the second frame to claim the victory as HSU hit an eye-popping .400 en route to the 25-15 drubbing. The Reddies did not allow the Tigers to see more than two consecutive points the entire stint as the HSU defense suffocated OBU from beginning to end.

SET THREE
Prior to the start of the third set, OBU went back to the locker room to collect itself before exposing itself again to the relentless home crowd of the red and gray. Much of the same was had in the first part of the third set when at 15-8, OBU flipped that switch that head coach Allison Frizzell-Kizer was yearning for.

Ouachita went on its own 8-1 run to quiet the crowd as the score stood at a standstill, 16-16. With HSU retaking a brief lead at 18-17, the Tigers rattled off back-to-back points to see its first lead of the entire match at 19-18. With OBU not wanting to get swept and HSU not keen on playing another set, that is when the home crowd truly came alive.

With both squads exchanging blows the rest of the way, a match-defining kill from McGruder in her final home match sent the home fans into a frenzy. Henderson rode the momentum into the proceeding match point as an OBU setting error gave HSU the final nod, 28-26.

Henderson State (20-8, 9-6) has one more regular season match before the GAC Tournament as Southern Arkansas plays host to the Reddies Thursday, November 11 at 6 p.m. Henderson will look to finish out the season on a four-match winning streak when it travels to Magnolia.
