ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got a career-high 22 points from Quawn Marshall and used some terrific second-half defense to force overtime on Thursday night, but Arkansas-Monticello controlled the majority of the extra period and pulled away late to defeat the Reddies 82-76 at the Duke Wells Center.
Marshall's 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting led HSU in the loss. Raekwon Rogers was the only other player in double figures for Henderson with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Reddies started out 6-of-10 from the floor and got out to a 17-12 lead at the 12:15 mark. UAM answered with a 13-4 run to take its first lead, 25-21, with 8:30 remaining in the half. Henderson briefly regained its advantage, 28-27, but the Weevils had another huge counterpunch, and scored 10-straight points over the next five minutes to go in front 37-28 with 2:30 remaining.
Needing momentum in a bad way, Henderson got its spark from Marshall. The senior from Little Rock scored eight points in the last two minutes of the half to spur a 13-4 HSU run and help the Reddies tie the game at 41-41.Â
A 3-pointer from the volleyball line at the halftime buzzer allowed UAM to maintain a 44-41 lead at the break, but the damage was done for the Weevils, as HSU went into the locker room firmly back in the game. Henderson shot 58% in the first half and out-rebounded Monticello 16-7.
The Reddies were unable to cut into the lead early in the second, as both Jeremiah Toney and Rogers were forced to the bench with foul trouble. The second unit helped keep HSU within striking distance, however, and never allowed the Weevils a knockout punch.
With Monticello up 65-58 at the 7:58 mark, Henderson began to chip away. The Reddies used back-to-back buckets from Malik Riddle and a layup by Marshall to power a 6-0 run and trim the deficit to 65-64 with 3:56 to go.
The final four minutes were a grind. HSU tied the game briefly at 66-66, but the Weevils hit a 3-pointer to retake the lead on the next trip down the court. UAM maintained its advantage until the final moments, when a tip-in on a missed layup by Rogers again knotted the score at 70-70 with 15 seconds to play. Monticello, who made just one basket in the last eight minutes of regulation, did not get a final shot off and the game moved into overtime.
Henderson scored the first two points of the extra period to take its first lead since the opening half, 72-70, but that was the extent of the Reddies' good fortune down the stretch. Following the first points by HSU, the Weevils went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to take a commanding 81-74 advantage with less than a minute to go. The run was too much for Henderson to overcome with so little time remaining and they fell by six.
After turning the ball over just three times in the second half, HSU was plagued by three in overtime and hit on just two of its seven shots from the floor. UAM was 2-for-3 from the field in the last five minutes but took 12 free throws in overtime and hit eight of them. The Reddies out-scored the Weevils 34-18 in the paint and 16-0 in transition, but shot just 3-of-14 from the 3-point line and did not hit one in the second half or overtime.Â
HSU returns to the court on Saturday when it travels to Searcy, Arkansas to face Harding at 6 p.m.
