ARKADELPHIA, Ark. —
Greyson Stevens hit two home runs late, including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth, to help Henderson State erase a three-run deficit and defeat Arkansas Tech 8-5 at Clyde Berry Field.
Stevens finished 2-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and six RBIs. Six other Reddies had hits in the win, including
Joe Myers and
Danny Mitchell Jr., who each also added a RBI.
Blake Patterson got the win after retiring the final batter of the eighth inning, while
Matthew Baker was solid in relief for HSU and went 5.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits.
It was a slow start for Henderson (2-1) on Saturday, as Tech broke open a 1-1 tie with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-1 lead. HSU had opportunities to cut into the lead, but stranded two baserunners in both the fifth and sixth frames.
The Reddies finally broke through in the seventh, as
Kaden Argenbright legged out an infield single and Stevens took advantage with a two-run blast to centerfield to make it 4-3. Moments later, Mitchell Jr. cashed in again for Henderson and brought Myers home for the game-tying run with an RBI triple down the right field line.
The Wonder Boys responded after surrendering their lead, and used a turf-induced error from HSU to plate a go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. Trailing 5-4, the Reddies went to work again in the bottom half of the inning. An error from the ATU centerfielder allowed leadoff man
Alex Day to reach base and back-to-back walks from
Logan Cowart and Argenbright loaded the bases with no outs for Stevens.
In a patient at-bat, Stevens got the pitch he wanted on a 3-2 count and unloaded a grand slam to right-center to send the Henderson dugout into a pandemonium and the Reddies to an 8-5 lead — their first of the afternoon. Needing to secure just three outs,
Cade Tucker made quick work of Tech in the top of the ninth to earn his first save of the year and close out a dramatic win for HSU.
Henderson was out-hit by ATU 10-8 in the victory, but four of the Reddies' hits went for extra bases while Tech did not record an extra base hit in the game.
Brayden Bebee pitched well for HSU in his first start of 2021 and allowed one earned run on two hits in two innings of work.
The Reddies open GAC play on Friday when they travel to Shawnee, Oklahoma to face Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. in the first contest of a three-game series.
